Many people have been buying questionable or poor quality Straight Razors off of Ebay simply because they have had nothing to help them choose.
Here is my private list of Ebay sellers that are offering, in my opinion, poor quality or questionable quality Straight Razors. If anyone can supply me with other Ebay sellers of same then I will add them to this list.
Poor quality means that the razors are either poorly ground, warped from poor heat treating or made from a steel that cannot be honed as fine as other quality razors and will not retain a shaving edge or the shaving edge is "coarse" as in sandpaper.
This list was compiled from personal experience and the comments from others on the various straight razor web sites. It is not a complete list.
If you have any questions email me at randydance at comcast.net

Just happened upon this post now, It might be an idea to sticky a thread like this so people see it before they get ripped off. I bought a Zeepk "razor" and before the thing arrived I looked at this forum and discovered this fine "made in Germany" product was infact, crap and even said "made in pakistan on the cover). This was confirmed on opening the package... the head fell out of the brush, the soap smelled so putrid and sickly I nearly threw up (think urinal cake smell, only worse), the strop was cheap looking and undoubtedly crap and the razor's edge seemed to be ground with an industrial tool rather than honed. What I'm wondering is how people like this are still in business if they advertise false information and sell a product that is way below anything that can be considered useful or practical, never mind decent quality! Cowboys and thieves.

Bill Ellis evaluated one of these and was pleasantly surprised - it honed up ok and shave pretty decently, and thought it would make a pretty good inexpensive starter razor. You'd need to get it honed by an expert, but it is honeable unlike the zeepks and others.
Edit: I tried to find his original review but it's gone now. But it was definitely a Sanguine he was talking about...

Bill Ellis recently left SRP and deleted all of his posts. He was not able to delete his threads, however, so the thread in response to his (now deleted) review still exists on SRP, and includes quotations from his original review which he was also unable to delete.

Yep, after seeing that review, I picked one up to try and they aren't bad at all! That's not saying they're brilliant but as a starter they aren't bad for the money. I found it quite easy to hone up to a useable standard and if my feeble honing skills mess it up then I'm not much out of pocket.
I did find it easier to hone than the few ebay specials I've bought, probably because the blade isn't worn to start with.
Not all rubbish is total rubbish! More cheap and cheerful.

I can speak up for "wowzers"...sucks butt (with lick). Dealt with him when I first got into razors. Sells Pakistani garbage. Worst service I ever got was from a seller going by the name of 'blademan", as well. Good razor, but his service was ass.

Randy, I think it might be better to list sellers that sell good razors like altima55. Or if we create a contact list and offer our opinion on a specific razor or razors that a member is interested on bidding on. When I first started there was a website called "Daves Daily" where Dave would list a number of razors on ebay both good and bad that was a great teaching device to teach us what to look for. I to have lately seen people bidding on razors that will not make a good shaver. There was one the other day where there was a clear 1/4" inch chip out of the blade and the opening bid was $19.99. There are still bargins to be found, but people can not keep paying these high prices for junk. It just raises up the price for everything else.
Thanks Glen

I've had a look through this post and I couldn't agree more. I sell razors on eBay and as a matter of form always try to state exactly the quality, state of the piece etc. to prospective buyers. This much can be said from the business end: bad news is around the world before good news gets its shoes on. I am trying to build a decent name and to be honest I just do not know how some sellers get away with it. I think it's just because they come across an old razor and think 'what the hell, I'll shove it on eBay as a "collector's piece - rare!". Sure I've been burned when purchasing razors but it's part of a learning curve and I do expect when buying lots that 10+% will be useless. That's just business.
I look at some of these items like the Pakistani razors and shudder - god only knows where the steel comes from (anywhere from old tins to old tanks!) so there is no uniformity to the brand - it wouldn't even be so bad if the were uniformly poor - at least you would know what you're getting! Trouble is I've heard reports that say "wow got this Pakistani razor and it was brilliant!" Well anyone can get it right accidentally now and again!
I think that eventually the suppliers of cheap crap will pack (no pun intended) up and go home but by that time a lot of first time straight users will have chucked their "quality" razor in the bin and gone back to a remington. I would! This is one of the reasons I'm going to be selling Dovo - at least I'll be assured of quality and so will my buyers. Trouble is I really enjoy selling razors on eBay - simply because I like them and they've been a hobby for ages. I'd hate to see that degraded just because some people will sell anything to anyone. What do you think?

Young is not a very good razor IMO, having owned one and trying to get it sharp....it just does not hold an edge. Only thing worthwhile from this razor was the imitation leather sleeve that comes with it, which is useful for travel storage.
The Sanguine was better than the Young out of the plastic sleeve it came in, but it still didn't hold an edge comparable to the quality razors I picked up later on.
I think they are excellent razors to use when learning to hone, since if a major messup was made, you are just out of a razor that's really nothing special.

I stumbled upon your website sometime back and I have to say, the historical section was very well written and enlightening. I was quite impressed with your private vintage collection and the vintage razors you're selling seem very well represented in terms of quality and selling price.
I'm no expert by any means but I have a 5/8 Dovo honed by Tony Miller that gives great shaves. While it's my understanding that they DO require honing to be shave ready, I think it's a great choice for someone looking to buy an affordable NIB razor.

One that needs to be added to the "crap" list is Wittex, their strops are decent but their razors are absolute junk. They even feel like junk when you're holding them. The pinning is bad and the scales are flimsy. The steel is absolute rubbish.

This thread really needs a list of ebay sellers that sell good razors, or at least the ones that sell chave ready razors that truly are shave ready.
I bought from altima55 but get the impression his auctions will be way high before long, as he seems to be about the only known ebayer with shave ready razors.

Well you get what you pay for! In this case buying from altima55 you get a nice keen vintage razor that didn't look that nice when he bought it. I do all my restoration mostly by hand, so I may spend 5 hours restoring a razor. If my time is worth even minimum wage, his razors are still a bargin. Yes his razors are costing more money. The crappy ones are going for more money than they were a year or two ago as well.

My thanks to MaClean3 re my site - it took a while and I'm putting some more of my collection on there soon. Incidentally, if anyone has a razor they'd like to see featured in my gallery please drop me a line at the website. I too bring the razors upto selling spec. by hand and yes, it's a bit of a labour of love but I just haven't got time to shave-ready them all for free. At least I give buyers a choice - I charge what is, by min wage standards a pittance to hone them and I strop them as well. I don't claim to be a honemeister but I maintain my own razors and they go on my face so I do know what to do! I've been asked why I only hone razors I supply - well someone did ask me to give a razor a 'bit of a hone' - the thing had an edge like a woodsaw. Never again.....:scared:

Pretty much anytime you see brand new razor its a warning flag. There are really only two companies still making strainghts, TI, Dovo and henkels has started again in limited quantities although I don't know if they are actually making them. All those others are junk made in pakistan. It should always say who the maker is.

Hmmm...
I could doll it up with some hot pink transluscent scales and call it something like "Maiden Chi na" model 29c? Whatever the name is, the description will undoubtedly include the word "Mint"
Matter of fact, all y'all can start sending sellers who like that word so much to this Mint (http://www.billysblades.com/Mint.htm) link.

I bought seven razors from this EBAY Seller. Virtually all were described as having NO NICKS, etc and yet, many of the edges do have nicks and some pitting as well. Now, I expect that ALL can be restored nicely, but that was not what was described. I did not leave negative feedback as this can be a difficult experience. I have only one negative item in my history and it was from a seller I paid and who did not deliver an item as described. He then gave me a negative feedback because I gave him one!
Well, caveat emptor. I just want you guys to be aware this guy has over characterized the quality of what he sells.

This seller is all over ebay right now. It's not smart, just dishonest.
Did you happen to run into this person bidding on junk razors? I was really surprised when I saw he/she/it was reselling them.
I regret that you got ripped off and didn't give negative feedback. This seller has 100% positive on over 600 sales. Of course, it was you in that situation and not me. Only time will tell what I'll do if faced with the same situation.
FWIW, any seller who waits to leave feedback until the buyer does is not worthy of your business. It's extortion and business as usual for some.

i placed a bid on one of those zeepk razor sets (2 razors, strop, brush, soap, etc) anyways, from the description, it seemed to me that this stuff, at least the razors, were made in germany. knowing that the germans have their engineering wired pretty tight, and not knowing what the heck i was doing, i placed the bid and won. i paid for it yesterday and am waiting for it to arrive. mmy brother who is an engineer said that anything made of steel from pakistan is crap and that i shouldn't bother shaving with them, but to use them to practise honing instead. my brother is just getting started straight shaving, so i was wondering if you guys thought this was sound advice, or maybe it would be ok to shave with them. and if not, does anyone know of a good "starter" straight razor i could buy for around $40? thanks!

You might be able to shave with them, but I won't be the one to recommend it. Zeepk strops and razors are garbage. Shaving with one is like competing in the tour de france on a unicycle: you can do it, but it will suck and people will laugh at you.
As for a $40 straight, there's one on the B/S/T forum right now for $35. You'd be hard pressed to find anything shave ready for that price anywhere else.

Terrible, I hate those dishonest sellers. And even worse, eBay isn't doing anything about it. I too have refrained from giving negative feedback for fear of reprisals. Even when the eBay rules were blatantly disregarded and the seller was evading eBay charges, eBay didn't do anything with my report.

Hey from a newbie to this forum. In my experience buying antique razors is best done for their aesthetics & not their useability. If you want a razor for shaving I would go to www.knifecenter.com/knifecenter (not a paid advert:eek: ). E-bay tends to have too many sharks selling crap :cursing:

I, too, discovered Badger and Blade only after I bought Zeepk's "starter set". The head fell off my brush after the 2nd use. The strop seems like its some sort of cheap plastic and the hangar is made from a bent nail.
The "new" blades came already worn and with blemishes on the cheap scales. As it was my first straight shave, I had no baseline to judge the Zeepk's sharpness and thought the pain and irritation was due to my inexperience. I have since relegated these blades to opening mail and those impossible-to-open clear plastic blister packages all modern electronics seem to be wrapped in.

Hey from a newbie to this forum. In my experience buying antique razors is best done for their aesthetics & not their useability. If you want a razor for shaving I would go to www.knifecenter.com/knifecenter (not a paid advert:eek: ). E-bay tends to have too many sharks selling crap :cursing:
ive got one good str8 at a flea market and i got one at an antique store that i believe could be returned to shaving condition without *to* much effort.

Unfortunately, I didn't find this site until after making a purchase from Zeepk. You get what you pay for and what I got was crap. The razors will be useful to practice honing or scraping pricetags off but not for shaving. The strop is horrible, it has flat spots and one of the pieces is vinyl, not leather or linen/canvas. Also, the soap smells like saddle soap. All in all, a terrible purchase.

I use mine to open those impossible to get into plastic blister packs that everything is packaged in these days.

well guys as you see im really new here, but i have to been looking for a cheap but good str8. i have seen a few mentions of the double arrow on this site. no really bad things about it. i have done alot of surfing on srp and found that the double for the price as had fairly ok reviews. they say the scale are complete crap but the blade on it is pretty good. it hones up really well and also get pretty sharp. so that pretty much has put me on a quest to figure how to make scales and make a good cheap razor. from what i also understand that there are 2 of the razors called the double arrow. one with a black handle and another with a white handle. the one with the white handle from stamps222 is the one that is pretty nice from what i read. well minus the scales. so take this with a grain of salt and for 13 bucks delivered i figure worse comes to worse i have a nice letter opener and something to practice with. just my 2 cents

I'm a n00b, and I just bought three e-shady specials.
1: W.H. Morley & Sons: Clover Brand Germany (has a nice fourleaf clover and other dec etching on the shank, no nicks, doesn't look like it's been used much, just old)
2: Geo Wostenholm & Son, Sheffield England: IXL (had a nick, but it was shown and described in the eBay listing, also included the original box, I already used some 600 grit to take care of the nick; before and after the nick are the bottom two images)
3: Hobbson Cutlery Co (this one hasn't shown up yet, but looks like it may have some nice wooden scales on the listing)
I picked up all three of these for under 30 including shipping. Looking into using some of the diamond lapping films (instead of shelling out big $$), to put an edge on each one of these and get a feel for them.
