View Full Version : Pomade recommendations
I'm currently using Brylcreem, V05 hairdressing, Royal Crown, and Murray's original. I've tried several salon products that my wife has, to no avail.
I have thick, dark brown hair and wear my hair short to medium in length, and sometimes I sport a bit of a pomp.
What I'm looking for is somthing that feels nice like VO5 or Brylcreem, but has more hold. I thought Royal crown would be great but it doesn't last all day on me - it seems to absorb or dry out more than anything else. I love the look of Murray's in my hair, and nothing works as well, except for the sticky waxy feel, and the difficulty in washing it out.
I'm considering Murray's Super Light, Black and White, or American Crew Pomade. Any recommendations?

Good to know.
I use to buy mine from a friend using her employee discount and get it for around $5 for the big tub. It was a great deal!!!

American Crew - I've tried others, but its been my staple for at least 10 years.
I use the Crew when my hair is shorter or I want extra hold, otherwise I use Booster lanolin hair cream - a great light hold/light sheen product.
I thought about Layrite, but I heard that it dries and makes your hair a bit stiff like gel. Is this true?
I prefer a product that remains soft and pliable and has some shine.

Then American Crew is your stuff.

I find the American Crew can be a little heavy - what I do is rub it out with a very small amount of water (couple of drops) to thin it a touch before applying.
Great value as you only need a very small amount - a tub lasts me months.
Awesome - I'll pick some up at Target. I just wish it was a bit cheaper. $14 for a jar of pomade is pretty crazy, but if it works...

You might be able to get it cheaper at a beauty supply store.

I've been using Bumble and Bumble Sumotech for years - nothing works better for me...YMMV

Cool..with shipping it's $14.98, but with gas prices at what they are, it costs me $5 to drive to Target and back from where I live. Thanks for the help!
Sumotech got great reviews a few years back in Men's Health. I almost bought some in a hair salon my wife went to, until I saw the price. I think they wanted like $25 for a jar of it.

And how much with shipping?
I've never used the Crew before, but am thinking about it. I also find $15 to be a little steep, so before I do that I believe I will, as Ookla suggested, try the American Classic.

Price is one reason I'm looking at Black and White. You can get a 7oz. tub of it for around $9 or so. Anyone using it?

I don't want to sound like a broken record - and i've tried a lot of products over the years when i've not shaved my head, and i have to say Dax Wax Washable may be ideal for you.
I posted a review, which is here:

The hold of Murrays or Dax red, which is great, but without the... gunk. It should be cheap where you are, so maybe look into that.

I suggest American Crew Fiber because it is the only one I have used. And it works perfect.

I would recommend against the American Crew grooming cream. It has alot more hold and shine than the normal pomade but it makes your hair feel like plastic and it's difficult to wash it off your hands and takes 2, 3 shampooings to get it washed out of your hair.

I use American Crew Pomade or their Tea Tree Defining Paste (mix it with a little water). I also like the Paul Mitchelle's Foaming Pomade or the Leave in Conditioner. It conditions and gives a touch of hold.
I also like Pinaud's Eau de Portugal and Lucky Tiger 3 Roses isn't bad.
My hair is kind of Borat-ish

B&B Sumotech *is* great/effective stuff....used it for about a year, but the scent grates on me by afternoon. It's tough finding a good pomade without a scent......the closest I have found is Kiehl's Creative Wax. Works great and has almost no scent.
My other recommendation is Jack Black's Pomade which has a light scent and works very well.
The JB is a little shinier and more of a true pomade than the Creative Wax which leaves little or no sheen.

Hey there Clay! Before I got a buzz cut a month ago and then shaved my head, I sported a medium pompadour.. used many products including Black and White, for me it gave a medium to light hold with moderate shine, but I always had to use a heavier product along with it to keep the front up. it works into the hair easily (about the texture of creamy peanut butter) and washes out pretty easily. Sounds like your hair is somewhat thicker than mine, so it may work well for you. As far as Layrite, I used the Super-Layrite with alot of success and hold, it will dry out some.. but alot of times when I wanted it to stay shiny or slick, I would use something like Murrays Lite or Murrays Hair Glo over the layrite to make it shine more, the layrite is alot easier on your hair then the Murrays and it washes out easily, even with the other products on top of it. Also with the Layrite if you periodically put a little water on it, it softens and looks wet. Hope this helps
Thanks SlickMike!
I purchased some American Crew Pomade on Friday and so far I like it. The hold could certainly be better, but it makes my hair feel and look great. I did notice at Walgreen's that their house brand, Men's Zone, has a pomade that lists the same ingredients as American Crew Pomade, and it costs $5.99. I may give it a try when I run out of American Crew.
What I would like to find is a product that holds better than American Crew Pomade, but without feeling stiff like a gel or waxy like a heavier pomade such as Murray's. I would love to be able to just use ONE product, all the time.
Thanks to everyone else for all the great responses...

I just wanted to chime in on what I use
Murrays Original....Thick cement style pomade that doesnt wash out easily. Easily the most hold out of my collection
Murrays LayRite....This has a nice sheen to it. About a medium hold. Washes out ok but definitiely not as much hold as the original.
Layrite...Smell is good..but a bit overpowering. It washes out very nicely. I find it to have a nice hold for a few hours..then it kinda dies on me. It also does an odd thing..of just making my hair straight..i cant always get the style im looking for.
Geo F. Trumpers Pomade....Smells wonderful. Rose scent like Coral Skin Food. It has a pretty lame hold, but it makes your hair pretty shiny
Dirt by Jonathan....this is a spendy product...NO shine whatsoever..but it has a pretty nice styling performance

There is one other I am hearing more and more about. It is HighLife- Pomade/Hair-Dressing. Here's the link to the site, you might check it out:
highlifepomade.com I have a friend that uses it and swears by it and says it keeps his hair in healthy, shiny condition. Supposed to have Emu-Oil to strengthen and re-juvenate the hair roots and has a light coconut scent. His hair looks alot the guys picture when you log onto the site- you know that traditional well-slicked, well groomed look from the 40's/50's

Also Yardley Brilliantine.
Both fantastic.

I thought Royal crown would be great but it doesn't last all day....
Look, I got other things to do besides keep your hair up buddy...
No but seriously, thats strange to hear, the stuff would last all day on me. I seem to remember one form "Got 2 B" that seemed pretty Butch.

I've been using the American Crew Fiber stuff for a long time but decided to try a few new products out recently. I purchased a tub of Shiseido UNO Fiber Neo Hair Wax (Acrobat Wire) and a tub of Gatsby Moving Rubber Hair Wax Gel (WILD SHAKE). The two products are almost identical and I like them a lot.
Very strong hold, great natural look, doesn't look greasy, and it last all day and even the next day if you want. Only down side is depending how much you put in your hair, you might need to shampoo twice.
