Here's what my EJ Super Badger (c&e) looked like after lathering up for a 4th pass with MamaBear Lavender Soap (built this lather directly on my face:

Nice nice! I always wondered (never tried it), how long does it take to get a proper lather if you do it directly on your face (skipping the bowl)?
I did that in the past with cheap canned gel with an Mach3 but that's not the same as with soap or cream.

I often lather directly on my face - takes me a few minutes less than using a bowl - the only difference is that you don't have hot/warm lather for subsequent passes.
While do occasionally do this with soaps, I find it works better with creams and shave sticks (which are obviously meant to work this way!).

Ashe...for me, a proper lather comes quicker on the face and is more effective and softening the whiskers. I was able to shave(pun intended) a fair amount of time, at least 3 minutes, from total shaving time.
And as for warmth of lather, I find that the lather stays warmER than in the bowl because the heat doesn't get used up whipping the brush around in the bowl. And between latherings, I drop some very hot water (5-8 drops) onto top of bristles just before going to the face again.
The only time I lather directly on my face is when traveling and using a shave stick.
Otherwise I prefer a bowl, as I can get more brush velocity going, and can pump the brush to get more lather into the breech, which helps keep the lather warm.
My 2 cents!
