I was stropping while talking to my wife, and watching tv, and somehow manage to nick my tony miller paddle strop, so that there is a litle 1 mm by 3 mm flap. Not sure how I did it but obviously wasn't paying attention. It's towards the end of the strop so I can still use it fine and just avoid the flap, but what do people recommend doing about the nick/flap?

Should I get a tiny amount of wood glue and paste it right back down?

Or should I just slice the flap off and be careful not to dip my blade into the resulting divot.

louee,

A tiny dab of contact cement might work better in that the wood glue will get hard when dry and the contact cement being a latex product will approximate the suppleness of the leather when cured. Barge (tm) is the preferred contact cement used by cobblers and other leather workers. Your favorite shoe repair shop may give you a sample or may have some small tubes or bottles for sale.

Good luck and remember to have the edge trail the stroke:001_rolle

I would ask tony. Hanging strops if nicked can be sanded out with very fine sandpaper or a pumice stone but paddle strops I don't know. If only the leather was nicked you could do the same but if the wood substrate is involved I don't know.

both thoughts helpful, and anyone else with ideas please chime in. I feel like I committed a sin against the strop gods, mistreating such a beautiful paddle strop! And I really don't know what the heck I did - I'm very good about having the edge trail - I can only guess I flipped it over the wrong direction, wasn't paying attention, and the edge caught the leather. Could have been worse - I could have nicked it in the middle instead of the upper left corner.

Ugggh! No more strops for you, 1 year!!! These things are like my babies........I need to go lay down a while now....

Seriously though, no biggie, sand it down or try the contact cement idea and all should be fine.

I've nicked my paddle strop a few times.

I cut the flap off and used one of my wife's emory boards to sand it off. The strop still works fine.

I know man. :blushing: It really bummed me out. My wife has made a few comments that I spend more time with the paddle than our kids! [not actually true by the way, but I do dote on it.]

Thanks for the fix tips. I'll stop moping now and fix it up. :thumbup1:
