Hi,
I've bought 3 strops from ebay. 2 were absolute crap, they lied completely about the condition of the items they were selling. 1 was a wonderful suprise, but again they lied just not as much. I think most people selling vintage strops on ebay don't really believe that someone actually wants to use them on razors but as something to decorate thier house or bathroom with.
Bottom line; insist on clear pics of the whole strop and ask the seller questions before you bid.

Best,
Red

The problem with getting a strop on ebay is that if the leather hasn't been well cared for, it's probably dried out, cracked, and rough. And that's no good for stropping.

On the other hand, old strops that HAVE been well cared for are most likely in daily use, and aren't about to be sold on eBay.

Old razors can be restored, but once leather dries out it's very difficult if not impossible to bring back. I would go with a new strop, whoever you choose to get it from.

Strops are a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Get a new one from Tony. He don't have an ebay store but he does accept paypal.

Tony is a great vendor. The price for the strops that he offers are a steal if you compare like for like and his are #1 quality.

Now that Tony's store is closed for what I'm sure is a much needed break, where can you all recommend I visit for my first strop? Or should I just wait?

I'm so happy with mine, I'd just wait.

I think you should probably wait. Tony won't be out long. As far as vintage strops are concerned, I only look at the ones without a handle or grip on the end. Only buy if pictures are clear and shows condition. If they do not say the leather is still soft or usable it probably isn't.

Alright, thanks guys. I'll take the advice and wait. I just sent my first straight razor to L. Abrams for honing also! Getting excited!
