View Full Version : Best shaving brush for Method Shaving
I know that Charles recommends his own "purpose-built" ShaveMaster brushes, but what other brushes have you guys had success with?
Thanks

The Shavemaster works fine with the hydrolast products, but so does my Shavemac and C+E best badger. The latter two brushes seem to work better than the Shavemaster for all other creams and soaps. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't buy a Shavemaster. Also the Shavemaster 200 is too large and awkward, in my opinion.

The new Heritage line from Rooney works very well. Method shaving fundamentally looks for a very densely packed brush with a fan style shape. If I were choosing I'd go with the Emillion or the Stubby #3 in the Heritage line specifically.

My SMF-III (basically a Rooney Medium Silvertip) works great.

I'm showing my ignorance here, but what is SMF?

I agree with Mark on the SMF III brush.
Before I got my Shavemaster I used a Simpson Harvard 6 for Hydrolast.

I have been having great success using Hydrolast products with a
Vulfix #2234.
No problem.
My S100 works great from Charles and is only $100 compared to the V200. Unless you havea really thick beard it works well. I have a B&B Finest as well that works well, but nothing works as well as the S200 for me. The AOS Best Badger I started with does not work at all and the Vulfix silvertip turnback is marginal due to its smaller size. Look for something with a fan shape.

Your C&E BBB works well? I wouldn't have thought that...interesting.
Why doesn't the smaller Shavemaster work if you have a heavy beard?

I didn't see where anyone said the smaller Shavemaster doesn't work with a heavy bear. That said, I won't call mine heavy but it's pretty course and I find the smaller Shavemaster works just fine.

Here's the statement about having a thick/heavy beard and using the smaller Shavemaster.
It's not a big deal, I'm just curious why it would be true.
That's what Charles told me when I was looking at both. I think it had to do with the amount of lather that the brush would hold for the number of passes, but I really did not dig into it deeper as I had already been there for several hours.
My assumption was that you may run out of lather with the smaller brush. I also preferred to use less cube and paste if I could to kep the usage cost more in line.

Wow, I've never come close to running out of lather in the S100. All four forms plus touch ups. As always YMMV.

My rooney style 1 size 1 works great IMO.

Same here. It always kills me that there's a serviceable amount of mix left in my S100 after I'm done.
