So, here's the problem...

I have diagnosed my skin as being "dry" because if after completing my typical post-shave routine, which is Alum, Thayer's (non-alcohol), then an A/S balm, I don't moisturize, my face (everywhere I shaved, including my temple's and lower, middle forehead) will be obviously dry and feel tight.

My problem is that after moisturizing I also don't want to walk around with that typical shiny, greasy look either........so what cleansers, A/S's, and moisturizers would you recommend that will moisturize my face enough to not make it feel tight and dry, but also be light enough so that my face won't be glistening with grease.

I have had really good luck with Baxter of California's oil free moisturizer.

I always moisturize at night; though some will tell you that there's no worse time to clog up your pores, it's always worked for me. Try what you're comfortable with; for my part, I prefer something thick - be it Weleda Skin Food or plain old Nivea. – For something to alleviate soreness right after the shaving/AS routine, I recommend a light moisturizer, like Weleda Men's Moisturizer or Iris facial cream. Neither will leave you looking greasy. Kiss my Face make some good ones, too, and they're very economical.

I really like QED's Skin Conditioners. Some people have complained of a "greasy feeling" afterwards, but I haven't experienced that problem. It really only takes a tiny amount to cover your whole face and neck. Plus Charles is fantastic to order from. (If you can navigate his website.)

I've been researching the Nivea products here on B&B, and first of all, which particular product of theirs would you recommend, and secondly, people here seem to think that Nivea is a "poor man's" Proraso, only not as good. So is Nivea even worth trying??

Also, I took a look at Whole Foods today, and there are so many different brands and price ranges to choose from, I didn't know where to start......I sampled the Weleda Skin Food, but it smelled pretty crappy to me.

Anyways, thanks for your help so far...........please keep it coming.

I like the Nivea sensitive skin version; it's great because it's so easy to find. Perfect if you're traveling and forget or run out of AS. I've never tried Proraso.

+ 1 This is a very good product for the price.

I have dry skin also. Recently I tried TOBS Avacado SC. It gives a great shave and gets an A+ in the moisterizing category. Definitely worth trying.

My skin is very dry in the winter. Here's what works for me:
Olive Oil Soap (Cleans without drying)
Thayer's Rose Witch Hazel (After shaving or washing my face before bed. Closes your pores to prevent further moisture loss and contains aloe for a little additional moisturizing.)
Clinique M Protect Moisturizer (After shaving and before bed. Very good for sensitive skin and doesn't clog your pores. It's unscented so it won't compete with cologne.)
If you're skin is really dry try re-moisturizing during the day. For this the little tins of Nivea Cream are real handy. You can one in a briefcase or desk drawer and have one always at the ready. Nivea Cream is very soothing but pretty oily so use sparingly.

I tried an olive oil bath today (and shave). It was amazing. Make a paste of salt and olive oil and rub it all over you in the tub. Then soak for 20 or so minutes. I then washed with Savon de Marseilles, and feel great.

I wouldn't do the olive oil shave again though, I'll stick with shaving cream/soap.

True, the Weleda Skin Food has a rather distinctive scent... but I can live with it, especially since I use it at night. But there's really no arguing over what one can or can't stand. – There's a lot of other good stuff at Whole Foods, try your way through the testers. I suggested Kiss My Face, Avalon Organics also make a nice one. As ever YMMV.

Yes, the classic blue Nivea is the stuff, a great all-rounder and fairly neutral in scent. – Can you get the little tins over here? They come in all sizes in Germany, but I've only ever seen big plastic tubs here.

Remedy for about everything: Proraso pre and post. Is there anything it can't do?

I have tried the QED After Shave Conditioner in Lime and it is very good stuff that does leave my face feeling greasy at all. The price is also very reasonable at < $10.

I've found the little tins in the US at Walgreens.

I'd have to disagree on that one. Proraso pre/post burns me something awful! Proraso shaving cream is ok but the pre/post doesn't work for me.

+1

Also, try the regular Noxema cleansing cream. It is very similar to the Proraso pre/post, but much cheaper. Rub in a thin coat and leave it, overnight.

For something a little different, try Corn Husker's Lotion. To me, it smells awful, but it does a wonderful job.

Another thing to try would be that bright blue sunburn remedy that is almost pure aloe vera gel plus a little menthol and other ingredients. I use one called Ocean Potion.

I have dry skin as well. Currently, I use either the Proraso or the Nivea ASBs on the shaved areas, which leaves the rest of the face untreated. So, I slap a layer of Nivea Essentially Enriched Lotion on my entire face, including the areas that have already been treated with the ASB. In my case, that does not result a greasy look. Give it a try. Best - MM

I also like QED's skin conditioners. I may have been one of the people commenting on a greasy feeling, but for me, that greasy feeling is only on the initial application. It dries down nicely and feels great. Moisturizes very well.
