The old packaging on the left. The "New" on the right.

Yep. Their hoping that the "NEW LOOK!" will generate excitment for the otherwise unchanged product. A very common marketing ploy.

Pantene Product Meeting
128 Madison Avenue New York, New York
"Ok let's get this meeting started on Pantene Pomade remake...any ideas...?"
"Yeah, lets put a FRESH look on it by putting a much larger lid on it..."
"I'm liking what you are saying...keep going..."
"Well, the uptake is...we cut the actual product by say...60%..you know jazz up the package..lighten the load."
"I like the way you think Anderson.... now what about the Arrid Extra Dry?...Ideas?...."
Yup, "packaging ploy" is big buisness. I belileve it is Consumer Reports magazine that on their last page every month they have a section dedicated to such deceptive packaging or ads. Just the other day I grabbed a "king size 4 pack" of Recces peanut butter cups at the market...when opened they appeared to be small...sure enough they were 6 grams smaller each (about 20%) than the normal two pack.

Jim, have you tried the Redken stuff? It's a bit more than the stuff you are currently using($14 at the salon), but I have been using the same tub of texture/style gel for almost a year now and still have about 30% of the product left.
:001_unsur Looks like it holds alot less product than that older container. True?

It's the old "bag of chips" ploy. Buy what appears to be quite a full bag of chips at the store, open it up and find that about half the bag is full while the rest is just air. They say it is to "cushion" the chips...

Generate excitement with people who bought it before, and delude people who haven't been buying it into thinking they're getting more than they really are!!

Step right up, don't be shy, plenty for all!
That is impressive, in a sick sort of way.
Interesting... that's just low. Do they really expect to get repeat customers after people realize the cheap trick? Apparently, but what a sham.

wow!
i heard in england they were planning of emptyinig all the excess packaging at the checkout when they pay, to protest ridiculous packaging. anyone in UK confirm this? Of course not it's 5 in the morning!
Is the labeled net weight of both containers the same?

I use the Clubman hair stuff, it's a heck of alot cheaper and it stands up to helmet hair...
Winner of the Black Hole Award.
Not to be too contrarian, but it may indeed hold the same amount. The diameter of the reservoir may be smaller on the new, it may also be taller and hold the same amount.
One advantage of the package on the right is that can be much easier to label or silkscreen. Decorating caps like on the left is a pain.
Like it or not, packaging gets stale over time.
At least they didn't sandwich it in the clear plastic that requires a circular saw to open and results in personal injury half the time.

I dunno, that stuff does not really bother me that much. I figure you should always consider net weight, and so.... A little annoying, but whatever. Now if I used the product, and the new was less than the old, and cost the same, then I would be annoyed by the price jump for sure.
What gets my goat is excessive packaging. So much stuff is wrapped up in five layers of sometimes very oversize packaging. It's just so bloody wasteful.
