Even though I have a crazy curly beard, I have long slicked back hair (jewish dad and italian mom  ) I have been using Vitapointe for a while now; the hair stays wet looking and the product does not dry out at all. I was thinking of trying something new, and what I need is something that will look wet, not dry and flake, but works longer than Vitapointe does. Any recommendations?

Brylcreem classic (red tub). Very nice old-fashioned scent.

A little heavier is Yardley English lavender brillantine. Classy stuff.

Booster Lanolin Hair Cream.

A great Canadian product made by the same company that makes JM Fraser shaving cream and Booster aftershaves.

Very similar to Brylcream, but more like a lotion and less scent.

I recently picked up American Crew Gel Firm Hold, Fiber and Pomade. I like the Pomade best of all, but I feel I will go through a bit quickly if that is all I use so I paired with the Gel. The Fiber is just too clay like and doesn't seem to thin out very well - when I try to spread it with wet hands it tends to just separate into clumps. I tend to keep my hair short and I have wicked cowlicks so I need something with a firm hold. Can anyone recommend similar products or has anyone tried Brylcreem and AC that can comment?

I used to use the American Crew stuff - the pomade is very good, but I found it a bit thick.

My trick was to take a bit of the pomade (you need very little) rub it between my hands and then add a few drops of water to thin it out before applying it to my hair. I also found it worked best for me on dry or almost dry hair.

Good hold, shine and scent.

Jewish Dad and Italian Mother = a great dinner conversation

I use Pinaud Clubman styling gel or nothing at all, but then again my hair is shot so I really don't need to put anyting in my hair.

For theater work when doing makeup, I have used Brylcreem or Pomade. If you need something that will set the hair like concrete, go with the Pomade. Work it into the hair and then comb it with a wet comb. It won't budge after that!

I make sure my hands are very wet before I rub some of the pomade between my hands. I've found that for me (YMMV) this leaves a brilliant shine, all day hold and a very nice feeling to my hair that is not thick at all.

Kiehl's Malleable Molding Paste is very light and easy to spread, excellent if you don't actually want to lookl like you're using a lot of product. The scent is very pleasant, too. $15 a tub, but it lasts a month or two, at least

I've used Redkin's Rewind for the past four or more years and like it...a pretty large tub for around $17. At the barber shop, they have American Crew forming cream? which is very similar to the rewind. It works very well (for me) too and has the AC scent which I like. Itcomes in a smaller jar but is around the same price and am therefore reluctant to shed out more dough on less product.

Tried Brylcreem today for the first time. Leaves my hair feel very, very soft with so so hold to it. I usually use pomade or firm gels. I will see how it goes for the day...

I just started using the American Crew Tea Tree pomade, and I am very happy with it. I worried that it was so expensive, but I need so little of it (just enough to coat the tip of my index finger) that the container should last me a year. My hair is very thick, and hairspray gives me helmet-head, but this pomade gives me a good hold even in windy weather and doesn't make my hair greasy or stiff. It washes out easily and doesn't give me dandruff, which was sometimes was a problem with hairspray.

Brylcreem followup (since the thread was bumped). After using it for several days, I find the hold on it is not that great but almost passable. I found I couldn't reply on it by itself and had to use pomade on the rougher hair days. What I don't like about it is that the next morning when I take a shower, it seems pretty tough to wash out - like you are trying to wash lanolin out of your hair (which is essentially what it is I guess). The American Crew products (even the pomades) rinse out like nothing was in there. So for me, back to the AC stuff.

Based on this thread and the fact that I was nearing the bottom of my bottle of T&H C.A.R. Cream w/out oil, I decided to give American Crew Fiber a try.

At first, I was very pi$$%d off that I wasted my money on pure crap. It left a very nasty, goopy, sticky residue in my hair. I was not pleased. Then I read the tub one more time in hopes that I may be doing something wrong. I was! When a products directions say "use sparingly", they mean it. I was not using a lot, merely a nickle sized amount. Apparently, that is way too much. A little dab on the finger is just rightand all you need.

End result...a very nice product.

Bruce,
You're right on with the American Crew Fiber. Using too much will ruin your hair. I roll a very small amount in my hand, usually the size of pea, or even less, and it works wonders. The small jar of this, should last forever, using it at this rate.

Another tip I found is I apply it from the back of my head to the front. Rather than starting in the front of my head and working to the back. Just seems to work better.

Still very good stuff, and I like the subtle matte finish to the hair.

One thing I found with American Crew Fiber is that it works best for me after taking a small amount and rubbing it with my hands. Otherwise I may have little clumps of goo scattered around in my hair. That was a problem I had with the neon blue Bed Head Manipulator. Yeah, people asked me if I had gum in my hair. :frown:

I'm not crazy about shiny hair, so I'm currently using the American Crew Matte stuff. And it's also a 'little goes a long way' product. Decent hold, and no shine and no flakes. I can't ask for much more than that.

Have you tried Groom & Clean? It washes out very well and give you some hold and control without the stiffness of a gel. Speaking of gels, I like Brylcreem makes on without alcohol called Power Hold...dries very hard if you use alot, but also give good hold without helmet head in smaller quanities.

I have found two very effective products that I now alternate between.
Specifically the Nancy Boy Styling Gel and the Nancy Boy Styling Cream (Lanolin by any other name!) Really great stuff, especially when you realize that a very small dab will do what is needed. I use both immediately after shower and light towel drying of my hair and find the styling cream brings back the light to my hair that has been lost over the years..:w00t: The styling gel holds like Portland!

I've got fine hair but not thin hair. Make sense? So product is essential to get it to do anything. It's most repsonsive after getting color applied since that kinda of damages the hair and makes it more stiff, if you will. But its a hassle going through that even though my wife is a hair stylist. I like the 20 min snip and I'm done. I recently tried Redken Rough Paste. Killer stuff for dry styling, but that stench! Awful smell in my opinion. So bad I can't use it. I'm going to try Jonathan Dirt now and see how that works. Otherwise I'll go back to Rude Boy Creamer.

I have fine hair too, but sloowly thinning. I just picked up American Crew Matte, only used the first time today. I didn't use enough... didn't want to over do it.I don't want that slick wet look. Where do you buy Rude Boy Creamer? All I could find is a couple of yahoo.com stores.

I purchased just a little while ago American Crew Forming Cream, which was praised even more than their famous Fiber -cream. Works well on me and leaves hair matte (which I prefer), but I don't like the smell that much. Resembles me of cinnamon butter my grandma used to make.

Used to use Black and White (they call it pomade, I call it wax) or Dax which is another type of wax. Both are far too heavy for my hair which is thick and dense. I'm looking for something that:

Is matte finish
Is very light
Has some hold to it

I've been using American Crew Fiber for over a year and I've found that the trick is to put a small amount in the palm of my hand and then rub my hands together to heat and thin the product out. Once I've rubbed my hands together enough to make it relatively thin and slippery, then I will apply it to my hair in a vigorous fashion. Once the product is in my hair evenly then I will attempt to style it. Of course, my idea of styling is just to mess it up to the desired level of mess and leave it.

I've been looking for something with a soft hold, and I've tried everything. My requirements: decent hold, no slick look, no stiffness, no stickyness, no obnoxious scent, and no flaking. I finally found what I was looking for: L'Oreal Studioline Melting Gel (Flexible Hold formula).

This stuff is great. I can put it in and run my hands through my hair after it dries and feel NOTHING. It still keeps the style. I'm hooked.

Bonus: It was on closeout at Walgreens for $2.25 per 6.8oz tube. Ask me how many I bought...go ahead...

The last few days I've been using nothing but the Nivea cream gel. I wash my hair with Bronnley English Fern soap, towel and then rub in a small dab of the Nivea, comb hair backwards and let dry. All day long great shine and decent hold. No 'helmet' effect whatsoever, more a cream-style hold, only firmer.

Not a darn thing.

I just comb and go. Sure I could get it more styled with product. And yes, it doesn't necessarily stay in place. Can't really get excited about all that, though.

Plus, I find the fairer sex (specifically my better half, although I have found this generally applicable in the past) is much more likely to be running fingers through my hair, the less it has product in it.
