I'm want to ditch the mainstream bodywash, but I get really dry uncomfortable skin in the winter AND summer so I'm hesitant to change unless I can get some recommendations.

That being said I'm looking for a good quality artisan/homemade soap that provides;

1) very good moisturization (I have very dry skin in the winter AND summer)
2) a variety of scents that last throughout the use of the soap
3) preferably lasts a decent length of time
4) and isn't crazy expensive. My range is probably anywhere around $1.25/ounce and below. But it also depends on how long the soap lasts.

I've tried quite a few different soaps that I'd consider "non-mainstream". Stuff you could find at whole foods or central market, but not walmart or target. Stuff like Grandpas pine tar soap, KMF olive, Dr Bronners, Kirks castile (I think that's what it's called) and I've wanted to try Zum but can't justify the cost after reading they don't last more than a week or so.

As far as kinds, I've tried glycerin, tallow based, and Castile. But have yet to try shea butter or goats milk based soap. What's the verdict on the best "kind" of soap for dry skin? Knowing this might help narrow the scope in my soap search.

I'm also more intersted in finding a good soap through an artisan b/c I'd rather support a small business rather than a huge conglomerate.

I've already contacted sue at honeybee and I'll be putting in an order w/her this evening for both some shave soap and bath soap. But are there any others out there that come well recommened?

-anyway....if anyone could point me in the right direction based on their own experience would be appreciated.

Issy's soaps from Mama Bear are just excellent. She is blown out of alot of them though, but you can find them here (http://www.bear-haven.com/ColdProcessBathSoaps.html). I just ordered some Claus Porto soaps to try as well.

I'm also in the same boat as you. Although I've been able to try many different soaps, i.e. shea butter, glycerin, Olive Oil and Palm oil etc and thus far I have not found anything that will work with my skin over a 2 weeks period. I actually thought that I had found a good soap for my skin it's called "sav-on marseille" Olive oil from france (www.frenchsoaps.com). This containt 72% moisturizing ingredients that's highly recommend in France etc. These are however non-scented, but you can find other's that are scented. Alot of people on this website will give you GREAT ideas where to search. I'm actually trying out some new soaps from www.honeybeesoaps.com (not in relations to honeybeespa.com). The owner's name is Stephanie and here soaps contain no Sulfates, animal tallow, paraben. They include Vermont rain water, Jojoba oil, Olive oil, palm oil, oatmeal, honey etc. Pretty good stuff. You will find there are several hundred different types of soaps out there, and I believe Mama Bear sells a very good range as well, and could probably tell you alot about certain soaps more than I can.

Thanks, just the info I needed concerning soaps for dry skin!
However, does anyone have any recommendations on body creams/lotions for very dry skin that is good value for money?

I get dry skin during the winter and just changed over to South of France soaps. I like the glycerin and milled types. They have a milled Shea Butter that is very good. They are 3.99 for 8oz here. http://www.ihealthtree.com/south-of-france-soaps.html

Also, Ive been using Avalon products for a bit. You should try their body lotion. Its very good and totally natural!

Good stuff. I live in the UK at the moment so I'll try and look up some stuff here. If anyone knows any cheap good places let me know.

Has anyone tried the Honeybee shower gels? I have crazy dry skin as well and wanted to give these a try.

Hi,

If cost is no object, the Santa Maria Novella soaps are some of the best made on the planet. Expensive but each bar ought to last a good few months. Locally, check your health food stores for some of the olive oil-based soaps, some will have shea butter and oatmeal and so on. Finally, the Baxter's soaps are heavily scented but tend to be gentle on the skin.
