I hear that Dubl Ducks are amazing razors since Lyn said they were over to SRP awhlie back. I dont know when before my time. However, the market has changed alot and there are many good razors being made today. I cant see how one razor made so long ago would be so much better than others made then or now. Im thinking of getting on just to see what all the fuss is about. Can anyone tell me if its worth the trouble?

It depends what you can pick one up for really. I got a virtually unused Satinedge on Ebay for $40, it had a bit of rust which cleaned up ok, and warped scales which needed replacing, but IMO it was a good buy. I had it honed by Lynn and it's one of my nicest shavers now, tied first place with my Maestro Takeda.

I briefly owned two VGC Goldedge's at one point which cost me around $130 each. Again in my opinion these were well worth the money, as they were virtually perfect.

I think my personal limit for a Satinedge or Goldedge would be $150 in perfect condition, and mayeb $200 for a Wonderedge. The Wonderedge's are going for big money at the moment though, more like $300 - $400 for a very good one. :(

I just payed $42 for a Wonderedge in VGC. I just wanted to try to see what the fuss is about. I have other very good shavers so once I am finished with it is going to have to be a great shaver or it will just be another razor in my bag.

I would not pay more than $50 for any DD...unless you really want it. I would not know about razors made today since all my razors are vintage. I am not certain but I believe there are just a handful of manufacaturers making straights these days. DOVO's, TI's, Maestro Livi and Henckels come to mind. I dont count cheap razors.

I like them pretty well, although I have to agree with the above, there are quite a few out there these days that are also very good. For the money, I've got a bit of a weakness for Henckels, but I gather they aren't as affordable as they used to be.

Actually, someone told me about the Ducks about 7 years ago and I tried them and found them to be awesome shavers. I thought the Wonderedge was " Da Bomb" for a long time. Over the years I have come to appreciate several other razors that are just as awesome and a couple I like better. Dubl Duck razors are still absolutely great shavers. The problem these days is that are they worth the money. They have increased in cost considerably.

Have fun.

....So says the guy that CAUSED the commotion for these....
By the way Lynn, every time Lena thinks I have too many straights, soaps, creams etc etc....I refer her to your DVD....

I have a DublDuck and enjoy shaving with it but must admit that one of my favorites is a recently acquired 7/8 Wade & Butcher Barber Special.

I'm glad somone brought this one up. I had a DD Pearl Duck recently that I sold on. It was a nice, competent razor but IMHO nothing outstanding. Maybe it's the fancy handles of the older models that make them so desirable?

I also have a Satin Wedge that is obviously a good age with the usual clear celluloid handle and fancy bolsters. It's about a 4/8 wedge and the blade has seen better days but the thing it does do (quite maddeningly) is rust like hell. I've never sen a razor rust like this one. I have to keep it oiled at all times or it's gone brown in a day or two. Anybody got any ideas why it does this? I had thought it might be made of tempered mild steel rather than carbon steel but that doesn't make much sense. Anyone?

The fact is there are many, many razors out there that give really great shaves. I don't think you could take one brand and say its better than all the others. I do have a number of DDs and the are consistantly great shavers but then again so are many others.

Good looking razor there - Personally, for the price I'm thinking that razor will go for I'd just add a bill and buy a custom from RW or the Maestro.

Yeah, I added Altima's wonderedge to my watch list just to see what it would go for.

Unfortunately, the way ebay works, we're probably screwing a member bidding on that just by talking about it.

Take a closer look, it appears to have a bit of a frown near the heel.

I've got both a NOS Wonderedge and a RW razor and I prefer the RW. The wonderedge is a very good shaver, but there are a *lot* of very good shavers out there, and some of them are still being made.

The Robert Williams razors like the Maestro Livi's are *great* razors. I just placed an order for my second RW.

Dubl Ducks are fact! I have a dwarf that is very small in length and not much past a 4/8 in width. It has plain scales and nothing fancy about it. It shaves almost as good as my Goldedge. Great steel and they both take to the hone like no other. The Goldedge is very noisy when shaving. Not a bad thing, it really lets you know if you have any whiskers left.

I just ordered a Goldedge from Joe Chandler. So I'll get to experience firsthand if in fact it lives up to the hype. Oh, and it was substantially cheaper than a RW or Maestro.

That's because it's a goldedge. The wonderedges are the ones with the hype and they are materially different from the gold- and satinedges, it's not just a cosmetic and marketing difference. Wonderedges have different steel, heat treatment and tempering. The gold and satin edges do have the same grind though, so they'll have some of the same distinctive "feel".

You never know how those eboy auctions go. Sometimes you get lucky and you can get a good deal. We'll see about this one. Our talking about it won't help those bidding on it though.

If Goldedge's get to be the same price as an RW or Maestro, I'm goin' completely Custom......hahahahaha.

I do not have an eye for this stuff yet but I am trying to develop one.

Here is an old pic of one that I was wondering how much work is required on something like this...I think A LOT, I may be wrong.

Thoughts?

Hard to tell without xray vision, but the oxidation may have progressed to the point where no amount of honing will produce a clean edge. As for the rust away from the edge, if it's as bad as I believe it is, it can't be completely removed. This is my opinion, though, and may vary from that of others.
