Okay, so I'm currently using Pinaud Clubman.... anybody know of some good alternatives that are nice and classic. Not really into fru-fru stuff, and I don't want to walk around smelling like I borrowed my girlfriend's hair products.

This isn't exactly classic in the sense that it has been around for a long time, but I've always been partial to American Crew products. Really nice stuff and IMHO reasonably priced.

I like Tresemme. Get it at Wal-mart, Targert, CVS, etc.

Oh, I also forgot to add that I kinda prefer the tub variety as opposed to the tube variety.
The basic goal is to keep the curls from becoming fro-like during the day.

What's wrong with the Clubman? IMO I have never found anything better.

Give Pashana Hair Tonics a try for a change of pace.

Try Truefitt and Hill C.A.R. Cream. They sell two versions. One with oil and the other without. I have the latter and it works very well and has a very nice scent.

Eh, just want a change of pace. Also, it'd be nice to find something that produces a little less "helmet head"

Another vote for American Crew. I like the forming cream.

Four CLASSIC choices for you.
1) Tres Flores - 90% of the women I know go CRAZY for the scent. My wife however is not one of them, she makes me wear a hoodie to bed when this is in my hair. The scent is very heavy, you made mention that may not be such a good thing.
2) Brylcreem - The stuff my Italian grandfather uses, and I used up untill my mid 20's. The scent gives me a headache (must be the Irish side of the family in me).
3) Royal Crown - I use this stuff everyday. It's cheap and good. Watch Raising Arizona to learn how to use it. There is almost no scent, but a couple ladies have told me that they like what there is of it.
4) Murray's superior - When the wind blows, this is the stuff to reach for.
If you need to get everything out of your hair, I use Head and Shoulders.
A NON classic but still the best stuff I've ever used is Layrite. http://layrite.com/
The pic is of me with royal crown and some murray's.
Cheers.

Well, it didn't look like a two-horse town, but try finding a decent hair jelly. They don't carry Dapper Dan, they carry Fop! Well, I don't want Fop, g@*damn it!. I'm a Dapper Dan man!

Dapper Dan comes highly recommended by people who know hair jelly!

They actually produced some Dapper Dan as a marketing gimmick. I'd have loved to pick up a tin.

Brylcreem is the way to go. Although it really does depend on what kind of hair you have (i.e. thick, dry, greasy, etc.). I find that Brylcreem can provide adequate hold to style your hair as well, and looks good after applying just a little bit to slightly damp hair. Brylcreem also does a good wet-look gel, but I've always found that the hair creams do a superior job in styling your hair than the gels. Furthermore, I always kind of get the impression that gels aren't really doing my hair all that much good.
The best hair stuff I've ever used though was Silvikrin (sic?) hair cream when I was in my teens. It came in a small, mainly white tub and the hair cream itself was a tad thicker and slightly less greasy than that of Brylcreem, and it smelled fantastic. Sadly I don't think it's available anywhere now though (over here all you ever see in Boots and in supermarkets is Brylcreem nowadays), although hopefully I may stand corrected.

American Crew Fiber!
My favorite and I've tired it all.

Sebastian 'x-tah crude clay' (or something). Excellent, 'moldable 'and scentless stuff.
(only in hair salons I'm afraid)
I really enjoy using Anthony Logistic's hair gell, although it comes in a tube (you want tub!) Is has a nice sort-of spicy scent, and it leaves my hair styled, but soft and pleasant to the touch (I also tried Garnier Fructis gel which leaves my hair dry and crunchy!!)
But it's expensive ... so if anyone has tried this product and can suggest a cheaper replacement with similar results?

I too have curly hair which as of recently I am trying to comb back. I use brylcream and I can definitely say it works. Apply the stuff right after taking a shower.
If you want something that washes out easier than the really greasy stuff like Royal Crown, Dixie Peach, etc, try Groom and Clean. It stays wet like the other products, but washes out very well. Is my choice when I want to "slick" it up, but easy to remove.

Well, I've currently settled in on Brylcreem. Making sure the hair is wet helps, although I'm less than thrilled by the amount of oil that one gets on your forehead throughout the day -- for some reason my skin has much more oil on it as a result of brylcreem vs the use of gel.

american crew fiber is great for the matte looks. grooming cream is good as well. for a cheaper alternative, ive heard good things about garnier surf hair. for $2 its worth a shot.

Which Fructis gel? the 'structuring one"? this one has alcohol ; mine is the "spiking" and is alcohol-free

Although I like American Crew Pomade a lot, I've recently been favorably impressed by Brylcream and Suave Groom & Clean.

I wear a pretty traditional rockabilly pompadour, and I've been using a little mix of American Crew and Dax Wave N Groom (red can) or sometimes Nu Nile (when I can find it)...PLENTY of hold and shine...sometimes tough to wash out, but I don't worry about that too much...
