View Full Version : What is a good hand cream?

I shower at night and lately after I get out of the shower and shave my hands seem very dry, but only the really the fingers and palms. Its a weird feeling I cant describe. Now I had been using Proraso Liquid After Shave which really feels nice on my face but I thought it was causing my dry hands. So I stopped using it for the past couple of nights and the problem still exists. So I'm not sure whats causing the problems and maybe it's just the weather since nothing else has really changed in my schedule.

Anyway, I've been using some Neutrogena hand cream to combat the problem which works but it really leaves my hands feeling oily so I need to let them dry for a while or wipe them off with a towel which seems counterproductive. But if I didn't I just know I'd have an oily mess on my keyboard and trackpad.

So what are some good creams that won't leave my hands feeling like the Exxon Valdez just dumped its cargo all over them? Or perhaps you have other suggestions to mitigate the dryness I've been feeling?

Renew by Melaleuca is my favorite.

in a pinch...Corn Huskers Lotion is great .
When my hands get really brutalized I use straight Neosporin on 'em before beddy-bye.

In the tattoo world, we recommend "Lubriderm" (unscented). It's available in the 16-oz size (with pump applicator), and a big plus is that you can find the small, 1-oz "travel-size" bottles at Target (I used to keep one in my desk drawer at work, and another in the front-seat console in my car).

YMMV, but we find it universally successful.

I would suggest a creme that is high in shea butter. There are a number of fine vendors out there. If you have a Whole Foods grocery near you, you should be able to find a variety of products there. L'Occitane also carries some very fine shea butter products. Other vendors are also out there via the internet.

I use Arbonne Intelligence Hand Cream, and will probably never use anything else. I would highly recommend it.

My wife and I have very dry skin, and this is exacerbated in the winter. In my mind, there is nothing better than the 20% (or 25%) shea butter hand creams from L'Occitane. They are expensive, but make a huge difference. If my hands are cracked, one good application at bedtime will have a significant improvement.

During more moist months, the Nancy Boy hand cream is another good option

For the kiddie-poos, we use various Aveeno products, which are widely available and very good.

Thanks for all the quick suggestions guys! Time to go shopping!

Renew by Melaleuca is my favorite.

One of my favorite shower gels, Mate, was made by Melaleuca. Unfortunately they don't sell it any more. My mom used to buy it from a lady she worked with but that was years ago and I've been sparingly using my last tube of it for about 6 years now. It only comes out on the special occasions. :lol

I agree...I keep one in my desk and my wife always has one in her purse. It is right here (http://usa.loccitane.com/product/product.asp?product=01MA030KA&variant=&=). I think that is is one of the products that Sephora carries if you don't have a L'Occitane store nearby.

Look into the Renew as well as their
ALLOY AS.
I also forgot to mention I like to mix the CHL with straight Shea Butter for a nice Hand Lotion. Kinda greasy tho. Takes a few minutes to blend in.
The Renew goes straight in to the skin VERY quickly.

Usually Lotil pops up in these threads. It is on my to buy list next time I place an order with a site that carries it.

I agree with above on L'Occitane shea butter hand cream. My wife forced me to start using it just before bedtime and I have to admit it's great for your hands/skin. Tho it smells a bit girlie so I can't use it in the office at work :)

I cant stress this product enough.

Its the toughest thing for dry skin. Greaseless. Awesome smell.

IT contains cocoa butter
touch of petroleum jelly
and moisturizers

I work in an office all day and around horses outside at night. My soft "computer" hands take a real beating with the cold and riding. There is a bunch of really strong stuff I could use that we use on the horses but it's greasy and messy. I have to say though the one time I sun burned my shins and lost 2 layers of skin and almost a third, bag balm saved my butt. One product though is the Cowboy Magic Extra Strength Dry Skin lotion. Cetaphil is recommended by a lot of dermatologists. It's tough to beat what a lot of farmers used to use. A good hand salve. Burt's Bees has one and I keep it in the truck to use right after I'm done with the horses. Works very well. I know because my wife complains that my hands are softer and smoother than hers and she doesn't abuse her hands any where near as bad as I do mine. Dish pan hands can really be a bummer on my poor sensitive skin. :)

As a thought, I wonder if Mama Bear could whip up something nice for you? I think she has all the fixings for making a great hand salve. If it comes anywhere close to what her shaving soaps are like I think you'll have a winner. Mama Bear are you listening?

I am... lol

I have a lovely hand and body cream that I offer for $6.99 scented with any of the scents I offer the shaving soaps in.. I am also working on a cucumber that I really like. I think more importantly is the fact that so many of the lotions and creams out there are scented for a woman which is not greatly desirable for a man, this is my answer to that. It is non greasy and works quite well, but I am still working on it. It can be purchased at http://www.bear-haven.com/Page7.html

I adore bag balm by the way!

Neutrogena Norwegian FormulaŽ Hand Cream is a product that works quite well, also.

Danged if Mama Bear doesn't have everything! In my favorite scents, too!

I'll be sure to check it out Mama Bear. Thank You and yes, I love bag balm too. If not for that stuff I would have had some serious skin damage for life from the sun burn. Didn't see it coming. I was on a 50ft. house boat on Lake Shasta under cover but the sun reflecting off the rocks and water was right on my shins while stretched out on a lounge chair reading. After 3 hours of baking my legs were a mess. I should have been in a hospital. As it was, I was in bed for two days with my legs shedding skin like crazy and my knee joints locked up in pain and swelling. The bag balm gave me everything I needed to heal properly. My horses love it too. I also swear by Bickmore Gall Salve. For knicks, cuts and scrapes which the horses have an endless supply of my first line of defense is Corona Ointment. Stuff is unusuable in the winter though. Too stiff. I'll use the three interchangably depending on what and how bad the damage is, where it is and what the weather is like.

I have the Norwegian Formula Body Lotion which is what I've been using and find it leaves me feeling too slick. Maybe the hand lotion is different? Or maybe I just use too much. :lol

Not only that, check out the Atlas Sports rub here. I like the warning at the end of the page. :)

Mama Bear's Atlas Sports Rub (http://www.bear-haven.com/Page6.html)

There's all kinds of stuff on there. I'm making a list and checking it twice. Now, if there was only a way to add this stuff to my Amazon wish list which everyone likes because it's easy to buy me stuff from there. I wish there was some company that did universal wish lists and you could point people to exactly what you wanted. Not just Amazon sponsored companies or private company wish lists.

Duh, I just checked and there is Kaboodle.com and TheThingsIWant.com. I really need to check those places out.

I use the Norweigian Formula "Neutrogena" hand cream. Got it at my local supermarket store for $2.00.

For really dry skin, I use Glysomed - its been around forever and has glycerine, chamomile and silicone.

Sounds odd, but the first two ingredients moisurize and the silicone forms a seal to prevent moisture loss. A very small amount is all that's needed and it lasts forever - the only downside is that it takes a few minutes to completely absorb and is quite slick until it does. However, if you're putting it on before bed, that's not an issue - I would definitely not recommend using this stuff immediately before performing open-heart surgery!

Cetaphil Therapeutic Hand Cream (http://www.cetaphil.com/products/Moisturizers.aspx) gets my vote.

There are certainly much fancier (and more expensive) products available, but Cetaphil is an excellent no-frills cream that really delivers. A little goes a long way and it truly has no scent whatsoever.

I've been extremely happy with lotil. I am gonna have to try that mama bear stuff though. So many scents to choose from, and yet another way to coordinate my scents together.

Udderly Smooth Udder Cream. I call it "cow cream". Cheap, very mild scent, non-greazy.

There is no substitute.

L'Occitane's Shea Butter, is a great cream. It's exactly what I was going to recommend. Very, very good stuff.

Reminds me of a story I saw on Shania Twain. She highly recommends Bag Balm. Which is another cow cream. But in all seriousness, this is what this hugely wealthy beautiful woman uses.

Now that's funny!

On the opposite end of the spectrum, as a diabetic, taking care of my feet is very important. I apply Bag Balm 3-4 times per week and sleep with half socks on to keep from getting it on the linens. My podiatrist is amazed at the difference this make. For the hands, Corn Huskers Lotion.

I do not have dry hands but my wife does and when they are bad she will load this stuff on at night and but plain white socks on here hands to hold it on. Big difference the next morning to me this is a night time thing greasy but it works.

I would venture to say that most households in Northern New England have a tub of Bag Balm. It has lots of personal hygiene and first aid applications. Could do without the scent, but it does the job.

I keep a tube of Gold Bond Ultimate for the winter months. Works well and not very greasy either.
