tonight, i'm pretty lame.
a glass of water, filtered from this huge PUR thing that i shove in my fridge.
on other nights, it's a glass of beer. it's a great feeling to come home after a hard days work and pour yourself a tall frosty one. for those really hard days at work, it's two frosty ones....

That's what I had myself. A damn fine glass of scotch. Smooth? Not really, but so damn tasty! :a17:
I think tonight - i am going to have a White Russian (with Kettle One Vodka) while I sit and enjoy my QED clay mask before I write my review... mmmmmm

If I haven't gone to sleep is it still night?
Earlier, I had some Frog's Leap Cabernet Sauvignon (it was a 2002 that could have stood another year or two in the bottle), a Mai Tai, and a Wet Woody, the specialty of one of the restaurants here.

It's a sweet vermouth. At one time I refused to make a Manhattan without it. I use Martini & Rossi most of the time now. But SWMBO really enjoys the Cinzano. It has a flavor containing a hint of sweet plums. Really quite good if you have any tendency to enjoy sweet vermouth.
There is an absolutely amazing restaurant in Monterey, California called Fresh Cream. They use Cinzano for their Manhattans, and it definitely makes a difference. Those Manhattans were good enough to be dessert!
On a side note, they also make a great (what they call peculiar) martini. The gin they use is a Scottish gin called Hendrick's, which is infused with cucumber and rose petals. They also, instead of garnishing it with olives, but a cucumber on top. When the drink is put in front of you, you can smell the cucumber. It's really quite unique, and very tasty.
Tonight is race night, a BYOB short track. So it will be a cooler full of Miller Lites.
Juice box for my daughter who loves the races.

Sorry Randy, I should clarify:
TJ's would actually be Trader Joe's, a grocery chain we have out here, I think its national as well; they might be in UT, too, but I'm not sure.
It would be cool if they sold liquor at TJ MAxx, though!

Perfect Martinis
Double jigger Bombay Saphire Gin
Double jigger Stoly Vodka
Mini dash Noilly Prat Dry Vermouth
Shaken over six fresh ice cubes
Two almond-stuffed manzanilla olives
Ahem, after dealing with Corey's :a24:
and the poor souls whose failed to learn from their parents not to carry tales, it was a welcome relief...
Nothing for me tonight..... not even an SOTD! I am at my parents house for the weekend - and neither one of them have ever had an interest in booze. The best thing they have to offer is a 6 pack of Sierra Nevada Celebration brand - 2003 vintage  I gave them a few years ago.
Cest la vie!
Tonight it was a very smooth, buttery, faintly smokey Frank Family Cab, and another Wet Woody.

Other than all the old standards, two very nice new additions:
Ritz Escoffier de Paris Cocktail Onions
Johnny Walker Gold Scotch
So after sniffing the scotch, it was time for a Stoly Gibson with two Grand New Onions... The onions make the drink! So good, having a second one..
Sounds tasty Ron.

I just had my second Bombay Sapphire Martini with some 'Citrus Olives' which are olives that have been stuffed with various citrus peels (lemon and orange that I've been able to tell so far). Very tasty, and it'll probably be Manhattans next.

Dbl Shot Ol' Grandad Bourbon
1/2 Shot Martini & Rossi Sweet Vermouth
Agnostura Bitters (Double Dash)
Two Long-stemmed Maraschino Cherries
over 4 freshly frozen ice cubes.. :a54:
Ron,
That's (almost) exactly what I'm sipping on now.
Instead of ole' grandad, I'm using Eagle Rare, a recommendation from Joel that is a fabulously inexpensive bourbon that is great for sipping neat, on the rocks, or in a manhattan.
My personal ratio is 3 shots of bourbon plus one splash, one shot of vermouth, and 2 dashes of bitters. I would've included a cherry if there were any left.

Hi Nick,
What brand of sweet vermouth do you use? It would be a bit on the sweet side at that ratio for me unless the vermouth was a bit dryer than M&R..
It is odd, I've been mixing with Ol' Grandad for so long I am not sure that I could live with another taste. They reformulated 8 to 10 years ago and I thought I would go crazy until I learned that I could use the 86 proof instead of their lowest proof (was 80?) and it tasted much the same. I guess it is just that to which you have become accustomed. :a26:

Ron, It is a little sweet, granted; however, I should disclaim that my "splash" is pretty hefty, so our ratios are fairly close. M&R suffices, but I use everything from Gallo to M&R to Cinzano (whatever bottle hasn't been completely emptied), this time it was Gallo. I thoroughly enjoy whiskey on the rocks, so when I choose to make a manhattan, I don't mind it a little sweet. Also consider I don't have any grenadine, or juice from the cherry jar (or cherries for that matter) at the moment.
I also find that as you mention, a higher proof whiskey doesn't really harm the manhattan.

Okay Nick,
All this typing and I downed the thing without enjoying it! So, it's time for another!! :tongue_sm
Ron,
the Eagle Rare he is speaking of is a 10 year single barrel bourbon, superior to JD Single Barrel in my opinion - that comes in a gorgeous bottle for about $20. It is 90 proof, has a wonderful boquet of flavor, and is perfect neat, or on the rocks, but it will add delight to your mixed drinks as well. I suggest you try it sometime! I think I'll have to do my visual DODD with the eagle rare tomorrow
