After nearly 40 years of not using mouthwash, I decided to give this a go. Seems kind of like an aftershave splash for your mouth. But does it do any good?

It has for me. I've used Listerine "Cool Burst" for years and my dentist says its helped.

I like to use mouthwash as an "After Floss". The Viadent I use contains very little alcohol and was recommended by my dentist.

The alcohol will kill germs (which can cause decay, gingivitis, etc.), but if you are prone to dry-mouth it could be doing more harm than good.
FWIW to you, I use a Tom's of Main Citrus mouthwash with Fluoride, and it also seems to work well :thumbup1:
The ADA recommends listerine. Its good for the gums.

You can probably disinfect old razors in the stuff. Kind of like Barbasol.

I like the citrus (orange) Listerine. I believe it helps keep plaque off my teeth and I'm sure it kills bacteria in the gums.

Cool Mint - great stuff for your gums. I use it daily.

I use the Blue Stuff daily. I do think that you benefit from it. Never tried it as an aftershave though.

+1 for the blue stuff. I find the non-alcohol version provides the same freshness (and supposedly plaque fighting ability) without the sting.

I used to swear by original Listerine to remove the smell of cigarettes from my breath. (I was a naughty little boy who started smoking aged 12. I don't smoke any more though.)
I prefer the low frothiness of listerine to its rivals on the market -- gargling any other mouthwash can get messy.
The new flavours are a great addition to the range and my wife is hooked too.
They certainly claim good effects of use of the stuff on both sides of the pond. I have no fillings, no gum disease, no missing teeth, etc. So this poorly designed case study of one shows that it is good stuff.
If you do try the original stuff you'll realise how strong it is -- it does tingle and have a really strong drying affect for a few minutes too (probably the alcohol evaporating.)
Summary -- It's the only mouthwash I'll ever use.

Just brush and floss the ones you want to keep!

I really like the new vanilla mint scent. May pick up the giant size at Sam's Club the next time I'm in there. A bit lighter in color than the original and not quite as strong tasting. The citrus/orange flavor isn't bad either.

That's what I went with. Price Chopper had a bin with a bunch of large bottles bundled with small bottles for $7.99. I had a dollar off coupon, so I got 1.5 liters of the stuff for $6.99.

I dont use Listerine for mouthwash, I use it in my water-pic, alone Listerine I dont like. First floss then a couple shots of Listerine in the water-pic tank with water and squirt away, followed by a gentle brushing each night. My dentist turned me on to this, although she also recommends using bleach for this and also as a dilluted mouthwash (apparently a used comonly in 3rd world countries to control oral bacteria and infections) once a week (bleach makes you mouth feel ultra clean but add too much and our mouth can be a little raw for a day). Oh my dentist is a older Iranian lady.
Listerine is an antiseptic and can be used for many things like cuts and such. In the marines we were always over-flowing with Listerine so some used it to treat athlete's foot among other things.

This has got to be the strangest thing I've read on this board.

Count me in on the Listerine train! :thumbup1:
I've got a little ceramic dispenser on my sink with a ceramic cup. If I get up in the middle of the night to do G-d's work, I take a swig. That way, when I wake up, my mouth doesn't feel (and smell) like a stampede of wildebeests have just run through!
IMHO, YMMV, +S&H, Member FDIC, your parents put it together.:001_tt2:

The original!
However, do not use it when leaving any establishment where you have been imbibing- the listerine will put you over the legal limit.

I also like their little PacketPak strips that you dissolve in your mouth.
The wikipedia article on Listerine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listerine) is kinda interesting.
Listerine was invented in the 19th century as a powerful surgical antiseptic. It was later sold, in a distilled form, as a floor cleaner and a cure for gonorrhea.
At the bottom of the page is a link to an ad for the dandruff control properties!

A routine that I've found useful ( recommended by a periodontist ) is , following regular brushing with a Sonicare, fill a cup with an inch or so of "original"Listerine and a splash of 2% H2O2. Brush again, dipping the brush in the mixture to keep it wet. This has controlled my moderate perio condition for over 10 years.BTW, using bleach is OUT!!!

I also use Listerine. And I'm not really interested in any of the "milder" flavors. I like the full-on hit of the minty ones. I could do without the original, though.
