I bid on and purchased my first Gillette from eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230063555450) last Thursday. Felt like I was taking a risk due to it not having the greatest pictures, but, it wasn't too big of a risk. At the very least, I'd get practice in trying to clean one up.

The razor came today, and here's what I've ended up with after about an hour of cleaning. I boiled it for 10 minutes with a squirt of dishsoap, let it sit covered in Scrubbing Bubbles for about 5 minutes, polished with some aluminum polish for a bit, then boiled again followed by a good wiping down with paper towel.

This is what I ended up with:

Quite happy with my purchase, especially for the price! Hope it shaves as good as it looks

$7.74 shipped!

Auction said the date code was B3, but, after cleaning it off, I noticed it was A1. Should be a 55, huh? Seller had a couple of them up for auction so I guess he sent me the wrong one. Oh well.

I also got a Merkur HD last week, so I'm going to go through a few more blades on it before trying out this Gillette just to get my technique down and not monkey wrench my effort to learn DE shaving.

Less than $8 delivered? Hard to do better than that. A1 would make it one of the first of the newer generations superspeeds. It should be a nice, gentle razor.

That one should have the same head and feel as the much heralded 58' TV razor. You can tell they are the same by the lines on the TTO knob. The ones that are not as good don't have those lines and were made arround the 60's and up. The good 58' TV razors with good cases sell for $40 and up so you got one of those stealth deals. Not as flashy as the TV but will perform every bit as well. Good buy!

Sweet looking find. It should be pretty gentle and give great shaves! Nice cleanup, too.

That's a beaut. That same razor, in the same condition, has sold here for 3 times that price. Congrats on the score!

Glad it has the B&B approval :) Seems that so many of the razors I've looked at on eBay say something like, "Just one speck of brass on the underside." So I was very happy that all of the brassy-looking spots on the razor turned out to just be soap scum and cleaned right up. Just started on my third blade from the sample pack and I'll be trying the Gillette after I've tried all 5 types.

Heh, when I got home from work tonight and went in to the bathroom I just quickly glanced towards the razors that were standing up next to each other. Had to do a double take to figure out which was which -- the new is as shiney as the old!

I have one of those. It is a good razor. It is not too agressive. Good luck. I think you will enjoy it. Good score.

So what aluminum polish did you use?

I used Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish. Have it around to use on the car.

I tried the razor once and got some irritation, so I'm sticking with my Merkur HD until I get that technique down. I'm sure it was something I was doing wrong as opposed to something wrong with the razor.
