I actually "shaved" three times today. Once for myself and "twice" for a couple lady's at work who decided they were going to get their husbands an inexpensive (locally available) traditional shave kit for Christmas! They had seen me "convert" three other men in the office over the past few months and decided it was worth trying out on their men. :) So I whipped up some Col. Conk (equivalent to the Surrey Glyercin Shave Soap available locally) with a cheapy boar brush (also available locally), brushing the back of their hand so they could tell what the brush/lather felt like. Then re-lathered with my "super" badger brush to show them the difference between what a cheap brush felt like what and a decent brush felt like. I also gave them some samples of good creams for their husbands to try, once they got the hang of their technique (Trumper's Violet, Taylor's Avacado, Coates Limes, Truefitt & Hill 1805). As for technique, I told them to have them shave with the grain of their beard, twice, for the first week; then a with-grain and a cross-grain pass after a couple weeks. If they stick with it I'll get them to try an against-grain pass later. They'll be using a Sensor Excel for now (also locally available and reasonably gentle).

How's that for "paying it forward"? Yes, I admit I'm a raving traditional shaving advocate. :001_tt2:

Is that the Merkur Vision razor in the front of your posted photo ? Is it heavy ? If heavy, will a person be more likely to cut themselves with it, if they are used to a Mach 3 would you think ?
Thank you, Sue

Hi Sue. Yes it is the Vision razor. It tends to be on the heavy side but it gives me a close shave. Yes again, if not used with caution, you can give yourself some bad cuts. The trick to using this razor is to let the weight of the razor glide across your skin. No pressure needed. It takes some practice but this is a great razor.

Hi Sue,
If you and the Big "A" don't mind I'll pipe up for him. Yes the razor pictured is a Vision. It is the heaviest of the Merkur razors. It really requires some skill to wield, i.e. not necessarily the easiest to start double edge shaving. As it is heavy you almost have to float it, as opposed to the standard advice, use no pressure. While I own one and have enjoyed using it in the past, I have almost become a dedicated Merkur Futur user.

http://badgerandblade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?imageid=361

The rightmost razor is the Vision. Immediately to its left is the Futur. This should give you an idea of the difference in size (and thereby weight). I find the head of the Futur to be a bit more compact and therefore easier to use under my nose and other difficult to shave places.. Hope that helps

Austin

Hi Guys,
Thank you for all the information and photos of the razors. They are all very handsome. Yes, I was thinking of getting my husband one as a gift. However, he is on high doses of Coumadin (blood thinners) and wouldn't be a good idea. Guess I'll leave him using my Mach 3.
Happy Holidays!

Sue, for quite a while I shaved with a Mach 3, then I switched to the M3P, and finally I switched to a Merkur Vision DE. Yesterday, I shaved with the M3P, and I nicked myself in 3 places. The same thing happened 4 times before, and each time, I had a bad reaction. I felt I was going to throw up. I hope I didn't gross you out with my story. When I use my Vision, nothing seems to happen except I get a super nice shave.

Best wishes,

Jeff

Sue
12-23-2005, 06:55 PM
Hi Jeff,
No, you didn't gross me out. My Dad was a firefighter and EMT who relayed a lot of pretty ugly stories during dinner when I was growing up. That and raising kids to adulthood toughens you up LOL

My husband can have a little nick the size of a pencil lead and bleed for anywhere from 12 to 24 hours even with direct pressure. He had been using an electric -per doc- and switched back to wet shaving after years of not doing so, when my soap was pretty close to 'good stuff'.

Those razors are really attractive though.

Man, when am I going to learn to stay away from my Cindy Crawford mole when I'm using a Vision opened up with a new blade?:scared: First pass too!
It's hard to finish off 3 and 1/2 more passes doing damange control. Thought I was going to need a transfusion before I got done. I have been using less aggressive razors the past few weeks and got a little sloppy with my technique. Oh well, my wife says I look good in red! I hope everyone has a merry Christmas!

Side note - anyone wanting an excellent, inexpensive brush that is not moppy and is capabale of doing a nice job of scrubbing, the SR-231 fills the bill. 28mm knot and holds it shape amazingly well. Less than $90 I believe if Charles still has any.

Disaster, disaster! I bought this soap last weekend, and just as I'm starting to love it so much, my wife threw it away this morning, because she mistook it for something else. Damnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!! I can scream!

Take a cue from the banks and start chaining your soaps to the counter top!

Well, at least you did get to use it! Was it a refill or the one in the metal container?

Randy, it was in the metal container. My wife's going to buy me another one tomorrow. She freaked when I told her what it was. She was cleaning out what she thought was old stuff, she was in a hurry, and she trashed it by accident. It really is fantastic soap.

Ron,

I've heard that before. I'd post a pic, but I don't want you to confuse me with Tommy Chong! :scared:
