After 300 or so half laps and about 100 x strokes, the KT seems to have gone in the wrong direction.

Try a different stone if you have one...i dont know why it would matter but i have a couple razors that are terrible off one type of stone and blistering sharp off another.
Yup. My plan is to go back to lapping film to see if I can, at least, manage sharp, if not smooth.
