What's new

shavepocalypse now

...

The only question, then, would be: "Would a Derby Extra purchased in 2010/11 still be sharp in 2060? :001_rolle :001_rolle

-Greg

still????

heh. only if it somehow gets sharp between 2010/11 and 2060.

Snarking aside, this is an interesting thread, as I'm a connoisseur of vintage soaps and vintage aftershaves... and stuff. (ahahhahahahhaha big word, means "hoarder")....

Reformulation is a concern, always - e.g. Penhaligon's shaving soap w/ tallow; Old Spice and English Leather after shaves & cologne; - But companies' going out of business or just plain dropping products would be my biggest worry - see Yardley soap, Old Spice soap, English Leather soap, Aramis/JHL soap - but also Wrisleys, House for Men, Sportsman, Paislay's, Houbigant, and dozens of others we probably haven't even heard of. Gone gone gone... and most of the poor b*st*rds who used those products never knew what hit 'em. It was canned goop for them!

Me... I'm stockin' up.

I use IPs and Crystals for blades - not too hard to imagine those guys becoming unavailable sometime soon... [omigod! I only have 300 hundred or so of those on hand.... I'd better get an order in... somewhere.]

I'm not too worried about it. Like someone else said, it would be the push for me to go get a straight. I don't mind the occasional cartridge shave, but I'm not going back to it as my daily routine.

Beware - It can happen so stock up while you can !

Notice that Francis Ford Copploa ran out of DE blades and had to resort to a beard.

Notice Martin Sheen stocking up on shaving soap

There's a bill in my home state's legislature to tax internet sales. I'm buying all that I can now over the web to keep my hard earned dough out
of the hands of those money grubbing progressive socialists before the bill becomes law. :cursing:

All the stores are starting to carry brushes and shave mugs. They are expanding their shaving aisles, it was not long ago that target carried Proraso.
As more people find out they can get a significantly better shave with a. 20 cent blade as opposed to $5.00 replacement cartridge, people will switch.
Regarding learning curves and extra time spent with a de, both are overhyped. I can shave as fast with a de as a cartridge, but what's the hurry? As far as the learning curve, its shaving not splitting the atom, let's be realistic, a few shaves and you got it.
I believe this segment of the market has and will continue to expand rapidly.

I can't see supply of blades drying up in the near future. Plenty of people do realise that the DE blades are more economical, and particularly in middle and far eastern contries, people are a lot more cost savvy. There's also a tendency with expensive cartridges to carry on using them a few more times as they are going blunt because of the expense.

There will always be a demand for wet shaving products such as soaps and creams, particularly the MWF / Trumper / DRH etc brands. There has actually been a slight resurgence in the UK towards these, and many people are trying to get away from chemicals and towards more environmentally friendly alternatives.

I don't think it will happen, despite the efforts of the cartridges alliance to eradicate the DE production, this industry is flourishing. I have in mind companies like the german powerhouse DOVO, Feather co. Ltd (When Japaneses are doing something, they do it for a thousand year), Derby and their plant that can produce 5 different coating, Edwin Jagger who is almost as famous as Mick etc etc Even if some brands come to disappear, that doesn't mean that everything will be wiped out of the map, in fact it will give more market share to the others. For those who fear P&G and their potential future monopoly..... having a monopoly is illegal, they can be as big as they want but they don't have the right to purchase every single DE blades factory. If that was possible, Intel would have crushed AMD for nearly a decade (Just a comparison XD )

I think the only thing that really matters are the blades and I don't see those disappearing anytime soon what with worldwide shopping available to us via the internet.
