Open Comb October

I tried shaving with a baby duck, but it nipped me on the nose and ran away. :bored:

Gillette, Bulldog. It arrived yesterday and I spent last evening cleaning it.

It still needs a final polishing, but it's had it's first use since 1968 (judging from the date code on the blade inside when I opened it). Kills me that I can't find the cord for my camera to document this, so please be satisfied with this picture of a baby duck:

Tonight went back to my iKon OSS/OSS Handle, Rapira Lux, Godrej cream. I had no luck first time around with the OSS and shelved it. This time I had an incredible shave. I just used the OC side. If this keeps up, it might rival my iKon OC. I would rate the aggressiveness as greater than the iKon OC and less than the New LC.

I used my FaTip Piccolo on its stock handle today. Recently I have been using the Piccolo head on a short UFO Kaiser handle & I have noticed that the shaves I have been getting have not been as quite good as when I used the Piccolo on its original handle. The shaves were about what I achieve with a New LC, whereas before, they were just below what I get with my 2013 R41.

The Piccolo was back to its best today & I think I know the difference the handle made. Due to its shorter length, I was forced to grip the handle closer to the razor head, giving me more control. With the UFO handle, being longer, I was gripping it nearer the base & the blade wasn't staying in contact with my face as well, despite the extra weight of the UFO handle.

I will go back to my problematic R41 & either change my grip, or try a shorter handle, such as the Merkur 41C handle.

Hi,

Today, switched back to the British Raised Flat Bottom NEW Long Comb. Dang, that is a l o n g name! I like this LC better than the US SC I used yesterday. I suppose that is why the SC was packed away for years and I can't say I really missed it.

So far this week, I used an Old Type, a New SC, and a New LC. All followed on a second pass by an Early Tech as all three of these Gillette OCs leave some behind for the Tech to get.

I will use the Fasan Double Slant OC tomorrow, finishing up using all four of my OCs in a row.

Here is today's update. 1 more day to go, 2 if you are a pm shaver. I am moving my shaving routine to the pm today as I hope to see both a Damaskeene & a NEW LC in today's post. I am trying to get them into this month. We shall see.

Gave it the old college try, but, in the end, the Old Type and NEW LC were too aggressive. Glad you joined us. If you find a bargain on a TTO OC Aristocrat, I think you would really like it. Smoother than the NEW SC by a lot.

I probably won't shave tomorrow, so this morning's shave will be my last of OCtober. It's been a fun ride, gents! I don't see myself veering away from my iKon OC though, it's really helped reduce my irritation and ingrowns. The glowing reviews from Chadao all over this damn site pushed me in that direction, so I thank you for that!

This morning's was:

Face lather L'Occitane Cade
Semogue 1438, which is starting to break in (way better than Muhle Synthetic for face lathering IMO, Muhle is too springy)
iKon OC with Feather AS-D2 handle, Feather blade (shave #2)
Alum
L'Occitane Cade Balm

After finding a variety of OCs too aggressive and abandoning them earlier this month, I decided to observe the close of OCtober with one last pass. This morning I selected a New SC , the least aggressive of my OCs-- with a fourth-use Personna Med Prep blade. I seem to get the best results with these blades when using more aggressive razors.

Same thing -- a satisfactory, close, if not terribly comfortable shave. No damage. It has been an interesting experience working my way through a sample of a collection of OCs I assembled several years ago and never used. Thanks for the inspiration!

It seems to me that the older Gillettes in general -- I have no experience of other brands -- were more aggressive because the blades of the era in which they were made were not as sharp, and many probably used them longer than they should because of economic considerations. I started shaving in the early 1950s and recall getting only one decent shave from a Gillette Blue Blade by the time I was at college. The Super Blue Blade was a revelation in sharpness but, in my case, good for only two shaves. The early stainless blades were nowhere near as sharp as the Super Blues.

The modern, sharper, relatively inexpensive blade does the job for me in a milder razor -- Tech or Slim Adjustable at 3 or 4. These blades -- again for me -- are an overkill in the more aggressive, older OCs.

I submit these remarks with the intent of starting a discussion to recap our collective experience with a range of OCs and -- presumably -- modern blades. I thought this would be an appropriate way to wrap up what appears to have been a successful, enjoyable and informative event. Thanks to Shutterbug for initiating the event and his conscientious record keeping.

My OC journey started on 30 August 2013. I was hunting for razors in the local antique store. They had this ratty looking Old Type and I bought it for a couple of bucks. I thought it would be enlightening to give OC shaving a go. I had started back to vintage shaving in January 2013, but had focused on safety bar razors - 38 HD C, Red Tip, Fat Handled Tech, various SuperSpeeds, Slim, etc.

I really liked the shave from the Old Type, but wanted to see what some of the other popular OC razors shaved like. I quickly went on a buying spree. Since I travel a lot, I got a Lunawerk travel razor. While it is ultra compact, it is quite aggressive. I then found and tried others as follows:

* - hoping these are delivered in time to use in OCtober

OCtober has been a blast. I have had the time to focus on my OC technique and have gotten BBS shaves on most days. I like most of my OCs, but the 1934 Aristocrat is head and shoulders above the rest. I anticipate that I will continue to use all my OC razors, as well as my safety bar razors, but my Aristocrat and 1912 (possibly the Damaskeene) will be my go to razors. My NEW SC and 38HD C will be my travel razors.

The main reason my Senator and Sheraton got so little use is that they have flown off to replaters for a restoration or refurbishment. The Senator is being refurbished in rhodium and the Sheraton is being restored in gold. I also sent off one of my NEW SCs to be restored in gold.

While I think my den is in pretty good shape at this point, there are still a few razors I would add to the rotation if I find them at a good price:

GEM Streamline
An Additional Aristocrat TTO OC
ATT OC head (R2 or M2, or possibly both)
Damaskeene OC

Past these, I don't see really adding much to my den.

Thank you all for participating in OCtober. We still have a day or two for shaves to be recorded. I have a pretty busy weekend, so I will do a recap early next week.

I started OCtober with a New short comb and enjoyed it very much. Did not seem to me to be any more aggressive than a Merker HD. Mid-month switched to a Cadet OC (cost $15!). More aggressive than the New SC, and a damn fine little shaver. (I'm giving it to my heavily bearded son). For the past 3 days I have used a recently acquired New long comb with fantastic results. Great balance and "feel", very audible. Used all three with Astra SPP blades. Open comb October has been a great learning experience. I would rank the New LC > Cadet OC > New SC as my personal preferences, but all three were very good and the competition was as close as my shaves.

Today's shave:

Razor: Gillette open comb New head with a fat Tech handle
Blade: Astra SS(not used before)
Brush: Omega 10049
Soap: Palmolive(euro)

$OCtober30.jpg
Contrary to almost all OCtober shaves this shave did not go so well. I had tugging which is uncommon, also when I shave off two days beard growth which I did today. I suspect it is the blade.

Because this might have been my last OCtober shave. A small recap how shaving with open combs razors only for a month worked out for me. I mainly used OCtober as a nice reason to get more familiar with my Gillette long comb New. I liked the razor already but using it has not been as second nature as using a Gillette Tech for example. I mostly used my LC New when I had a long beard to get rid off. During OCtober I have used it regularly and got great shaves with it. Whether or not it will stay a razor I use regularly is to be seen because I suspect I have a preference for milder razors. But I can also say with confidence that if the LC New would be my only razor all my needs razor wise would be covered. Especially because of it's capability to shave both my long beards as my short stubble beards very well.

Another great thing about OCtober for me is that I can proudly say that I have been able to use my whole OC razor collection during it. All three off them. Besides the LC New I rediscovered my Fasan OC slant and Albanio OC. They both worked well for me but I prefer the LC New over them.

Last but not least I want to thank Shutterbug57 for keeping track of all the shaves.

31 days have OCtober, I'm not done yet-

Well I found the camera cord, so I'm back in business. Yesterday's shave with the Bulldog was a little rough. A good example of a heavy handle's effect familiar razor head design. Another go today. Here's a photo of the new one.

$bulldog f.jpg

Something tomorrow to wrap it all up.

30 OCtober 2013 - Day 30/Shave 30

GEM 1912 Damaskeene
GEM SS PTFE blade
Rudy Vey keyhole brush
Mike's Rose/Cedar soap

DFS, but I attribute that to not showering just before the shave as normal. I just splashed on some warm water and went to work. Very smooth and comfortable. I will try it again soon under normal circumstances. I have to do some more cleaning on the handle of this razor, but the head looks nice.

Tonights OCtober shave;

Gillette New Short Comb head, 50's gold Tech handle frankenrazor,
Wilkinson Sword blade (Indian),
1910's Mayd Well brush,
Dr. Harris Arlington shaving soap,
Nivea Post Shave Balm,
Pinaud Clubman after shave splash,
Avon Mesmerize cologne,

I created this Frankenrazor because the Gillette Short Comb New base plate would not match up correctly to an appropriate Ball End or Common Bar handle. It appears to be some sort of factory defect. At any rate the gold Tech handle mounts securely and provides good balance and heft for this Short Comb set-up. Although I did cut myself once, I find this combination very workable. On another note, I would like to say that I've had a wonderful time this month trying all the open comb razors in my collection. I still have 3 more to try sometime, one of which will be used tomorrow, but like GaryG, I'm running out of open comb razors too. Thanks everyone for yor interest, and an extra thanks to shutterbug for keeping everything going. God Bless and have a good evening everyone.

Doc Bugg asked in an earlier post what our favorite Open Combed razors were .. The NEW Improved's are probably my favorite. At the top of that group is (my opinion) the best of them - the Bostonian. This one with a 1924 date code served me as well today as it must have someone almost 90 years ago ...

The elevator which lifts the razor as the lid opens is just the bee's knees .. and just coincidentally, one possible explanation for that expression dates to 1924 ..

$IMG_6928.jpg
My thanks also to our host Shutterbug57 for the month, had fun getting the razors out & in use, some of which don't make regular appearances at the sink ... and seeing some that I hadn't seen before (that Fasan Slant OC is wild) .. just one more day left ...

Just a note, my Black & Red New LC is on the list but my common bar New LC (18th shave) didn't get added.

Well I decided to finish off the month of OCtober with my recently acquired Darwin. The razor performed beautifully and left me with BBS skin with very little irritation. The razor looks to be a Standard but is actually a much rarer model designed to use a proprietary blade. I found a fairly easy way to modify a standard blade so that it would work almost perfectly, and I am happy to report that this particular shaving tool's performance easily lives up to its beautiful appearance and rugged design. After my experience with Darwin it's no wonder to me that they are so highly sought after.

Shutterbug, I would like to thank you for all of your efforts. They have made the Open Comb October experience that much more enjoyable. It was a real pleasure to get to run through my OC collection and I look forward to adding a few more pieces to the bunch.
