Forthcoming Changes to FDA Regulations?

Unfortunately, I do not believe that will be the case. Manufacturers will likely pass on the huge cost of getting new products approved by raising prices across the board.

It's not just the cost, the FDA has not approved any new cigarettes since they took control of them, which if I remember correctly was over 6 years ago. Big tobacco has the money and has submitted new blends. They are currently hung up in red tape is my understanding. There was no time frame given on approving a new blend. Also I've heard they keep changing the requirements.

I am skeptically holding hope that Rick Newcombe is right. All the while, still hoarding like a mad man.

The real ridiculousness is in the fact that a Pipe is considered a tobacco product. I think this is just a money grab since some of these pipes are worth thousands of $$$.

That's the part that could get everything killed. We'll, that and treating different sizes of the same cigar as totally new blends. Those two items are so patently ridiculous that it would be difficult for the FDA to defend them.

It looks like a money grab, but I don't think it is. IMO it's an alternative tactic for anti-smoking zealots trying to save us from our selves. This happened back in the 1930's with another product. They leveled a $200 tax stamp on a $5 item in what they openly called a "revenue generating measure." In the end, they would have generated far more revenue by charging $20 and getting people to actually buy the tax stamps. They knew that when they passed the law, but revenue wasn't the point. Their goal was shutting down or severely limiting an industry.

I also think it's a bit of the typical agency kingdom building within the government.

Self Ignored by Vista
So, my sister and brother in law came to visit this weekend. My brother in law works for a Congressman, and he'll occasionally talk to me about what he knows is going on behind the scenes in the House. He said that we should expect something positive on the tobacco front, in regards to the FDA regulations. There's some technical issues that make things interesting/complicated, but he thinks that they're going to kill it. It's not a matter of if, it's only a matter of when.

That's good to know, Jason.

We can't predict what is going to happen, but here's a little food for thought.

This won't end well.

Everyone seems to be doing okay, Tony. After all...pipe and cigar smoking, and the Brown Leaf, is a gentlemanly pursuit. :001_smile

13 Jan Congress Re-Introduces the Traditional Cigar Manufacturing and Small Business Jobs Preservation Act

Posted at 21:36h in Federal, Federal Action Alert by Daniel Trope

Today, Congressman Bill Posey (R-FL) re-introduced the Traditional Cigar Manufacturing and Small Business Jobs Preservation Act of 2017, at the request of the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association (“IPCPR”) and Cigar Rights of America (“CRA”). The legislation’s explicit purpose is to both define what constitutes a “premium cigar” and exempts the product category from regulations now in place under the FDA’s Final Rule. The bill is identical to its predecessor in the 114[SUP]th[/SUP] Congress, H.R. 662, which had the support of 170 Members of the House of Representatives.

Like H.R. 662 and previous bills, Congresswoman Kathy Castor (D-FL) is once again serving as the primary Democrat co-sponsor on the legislation. At its introduction, the bill has strong bi-partisan support with 40 original co-sponsors on the legislation.
Under the provisions of the act, a cigar is “premium” and exempt from the rule if it meets several strict definitions:

  • It must be wrapped in 100 percent leaf tobacco and bunched in 100 percent tobacco filler;
  • Can not contain a filter, tip or non-tobacco mouthpiece;
  • Must weigh at-least 6 pounds per 1,000 count;
  • Has 100 percent tobacco binder and is hand rolled or is made with human hands to lay the wrapper or binder onto one machine that bunches, wraps and caps the individual cigars or has a homogenized tobacco leaf binder and is made in the United States using human hands to lay a 100 percent leaf tobacco wrapper onto one machine that bunches, wraps, and caps each individual cigar.

Hopefully this will pass.

P.S. I haven't read the exact text of the bill, just this summary.

Fridays are Fishtastic!
Since the only driving force behind this administration's agenda is to undo what the previous one did, maybe someone should tweet that Obama did this. Not trying to br political, I just don't want to see MacB HH Latakia Flake and Old Dark Fired go away.
