Another vote for the 40's style Super Speed. Gives a great shave. Want a little more agressive? Back the knob off just a little bit and it's good at getting at the cross grain patches. Next step up is the Adjustable. For non-Gillette? Get a Merkur Progress and start in at the #1 setting.
In case you haven't seen it, here is a good article comparing the EJ DE89L & the Merkur 34C, which might help if you are trying to decide between the two.
If money is not an issue then my vote goes to Lord L6 just ignore the low price tag.
The safety bar is a bit sharper/pointy than other razor which makes it very easy to track and get a sense on how much pressure you apply. Too much pressure is the mistake beginners make all the time.
I started with Merkur 23C/180. Moved to a Merkur Long handle progress (gave away the 23C). Now the L6 is used almost all the time and I wish I started with it.
My full review here:
i'll see my new safety razors in some days, i shoped parker 99r the bigest, one merkur 23 long handle(small hands), 29 us$$ parker, 32 us$$ dollars the merkur.great products i think.
I think the Weber would be a great starting razor. It is mild, but can provide a great shave. It is similiar to the EJ89 but I feel that grip is better, but it is also twice the price.
