What's new

Any guitar players out there?

I actually need to replace that tusq nut so I might check out Iboney. I tried taking the nubs off by putting sandpaper on first fret to match radius and didn't get perfect even pressure when rubbing nut on it. Now I get a little low string buzz open no matter how I set the action.

Love the Rick. Mine is a '74 4001. Also FG. Yours is a 4003 right? What year?

Yes, 4003. :001_smile It's actually the newest addition to my collection, at a fresh 2 months old from the factory. Dream bass for 20 years and loving it. Would love to see a pic of your 4001! I've been trying to track down a reasonably priced birth year 4001. No luck yet!

Thanks for the offer! So far I've only skimmed the surface at TDPRI, downloaded some full size plans from there on the weekend after deciding i'd be fabricating the neck, now need to find a large format printer.

Was looking at the 4 way switch but i've also used a 5 way in a two pickup Squier so looking over the options. I've used bits and pieces of Guitar Fetish hardware including a couple sets of tuners and never had an issue so, to go with the Armadillo brass i've had my eye on the Guitar Fetish brass buttoned tuners.

Ideas, ideas, ideas, as the funds become available i'll slowly get the pieces together. Two nearby sellers of luthier's woods so maple for the neck is very easy to come by.

Yup Aaron that's the stuff, bone is the goto, i do have one guitar with a black Graphtech nut, sonically does it make a difference... who knows, was an aesthetic call, vanity...

Thanks guys!
dave

ps. Is there an easy or intuitive way i'm missing to go about multiple quoting?

On mobile sorry about not trimming quote. You can do 5 but I'd personally stick with 3 or 4 way. My blue sg with the vine inlay on neck is actually a prs set up. Wrap around bridge and 5 way rotary. How do you plan on doing 5 way with those routs? Are you putting rail buckers to coil tap or change phases or series/parallel or are you hogging out a spot for a middle pickup? If the former really shield and ground as the signal is easy to interfere with the more you do.

That is going to be one nice Tele!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, still much planning and then there's dealing with the execution, will be a fun adventure.

I use the 5 way with a couple single coils and most of the time it's either the neck or the bridge so the other three are just a bit of spice. The print out i have for the wiring calls it Tele Wiring Fat 5 Way, goes with the obvious three positions then adds bridge and neck out of phase (for some dark quack) and last position puts a cap in series with the neck pick up to roll off some low end.

This looks to be it, The Bill Lawrence 5-Way Telecaster Circuit.

Finally got an exact age on my F-340 Takamine while chasing down a very frustrating little buzz (don't get me started on that..) it was built September 15 1976.it is sooo much older than me lol

Ah, let me know how it turns out. That's what I've done with some pretty high output humbuckers and I personally find the sound kind of thin, weak and mostly unusable. Which is why I can't feature single coils improving that issue, but it could be poor shielding/grounding on my part. But the 4th position on my tele does a great job emulating a humbucker. I'm interested to know how it goes!

I'm not sure if I've posted on the thread before, but just before Christmas I treated myself. I traded in my lovely Epiphone Casino in cherry red with case for a guitar that's I've always wanted from first hearing the Birds Mr. tambourine man. I bought a Rickenbacker 330 in oiled walnut. To say its all I wanted is an under statement. She sounds amazing and so jangly it makes my hair stand. Is brilliant for playing the smiths, the birds, or any thing really.

This is one thread I'd like to see revived a bit! Anyone else picking up any new toys?
Now that Gretsch has released a new (cheaper) series, that keeps with the original twang that their know for, I was all over that!
The only flaw I found was they used some butt ugly knobs, but some Telecaster Chrome took care of that.

Nice! Do you find that they do a good job with these new ones on replicating the tone of the higher end models? I can't even tell you how many times I've almost bought a Gretsch. That gold finish looks great. Congrats!

I'd go with close, but modern? You'd have to tweak the amp effects to the right spot, but so far I'm doing well with Eddie Cochran and Beatles type stuff. Being a humbucker, I find if I lower my amp bass a notch and thusly up the treble a notch, there's certainly a true Gretsch sound.

This guy does a pretty decent thorough review:

I can hear what you mean by needing to lower the bass and raise the treble on your amp. It does sound good though. I wonder what amp he's using. It looks like nothing's plugged into his Marshall or Mesa.

Sweet guitar. I'm a newly converted Gretsch man myself. I picked this baby up about a year ago and now I can't put it down. I won't even play any of my other guitars anymore.
