2011 Shave Purchase Sabbatical--Gentlemanly Restraint

BigFoot

I wanna be sedated!

As a newbie of 6 months who's collected somewhere around 25-30 DE's, 8 tubs of cream, 4 soaps, and about 8 aftershave splashes and balms, I would like to say that I want to succeed at this, but I would need some sort of intervention. I have enough blades to last me 3-4 years according to my Excel sheet, so wont be buying any more of those. And I have a number of samples I've yet to go through. Seriously, for someone who is studying to be a psychologist working with addictions, I sure as hell need to work on mine.

my exceptions: getting AOS sandalwood SC and ASB at a great price on the BST.
Any flea market antique finds of a toggle or double ring. THAT'S IT :tongue_sm

We live in the same city. If you buy things and give them to me......Is that falling off the wagon?

Excel spreadsheet huh, no AD here :w00t:.

I definitely want to get in on this one. I've already got 4 backup soaps and a backup cream unopened, so I'll definitely make it through the year on software no problem (only 10 items open...). I've got about 10 aftershaves, only 1 of which is in danger of being emptied, and never really got into a bad SBAD. I do have a Kent gift set on the way with a boar brush and rebranded MWF, so I'm covered for that....

My only exception:

I want another injector. I've only got a G-type and I'd like to get at least 1 more. I've got 5 GEMs and 3 DEs (plus I asked for a Progress from my brother for Christmas), so I'm OK there, but I'm sorely lacking in the injector department. I've got a bid in for one on Ebay, so if that falls through, it's possible I'll need to get one a few days into 2011...

I have been at this old-school wetshaving for less than one year. Half-way through I knew I had an AD problem, but just couldn't stop myself. Inspired by the 2010 Shave Purchase Sabbatical thread I vowed to try just going through 2010. I promptly fell off the wagon, that week, if I recall.

But now with 30-40 creams and soaps, half as many after shaves, plenty of blades, and about 10 brushes (depending what you consider "in rotation"), I'm ready to give it another go.

How about you? Are you ready to commit? There is strength in numbers! We can support each other! Post here and tell the forum that you can show some gentlemanly restraint, and see if you can't actually finish some product. List any exceptions you are allowing yourself, but stick to the plan.

If you cave-in, report back and let us know what happened. However, it might be best to keep pictures limited to The Score forum, as brush/soap/cream/AS porn might be bad for morale.

My exceptions
  • Rooney Heritage--If I get a can't-pass-up deal, I might have to take it.
  • Shavemac D01 two-band--I'm not sure I really want one, but I might. :tongue_sm
  • Group buys--There's been some talk about different things, and if one I like materializes, I'm treating myself.

Who's with me?

I need to follow suit:

My exceptions would be:
  1. If I run out of something I really use
  2. If I find an item to PIF to a new wetshaver
  3. A group buy (I have missed out on all so far) and would like something with the B&B logo to represent my membership

i was going to suggest the same thing to you. presents from you don't count. :tongue_sm

haha... yea.. i like to tell myself that i'm not addicted but SWMBO doesn't forget to call me out when she asks if i've documented my shave in my "shaving excel sheet." also the first thing she mentions to anyone when i start to talk about my hobby. "he even has a sheet where we records his shaving experience after every shave."

so yea, if anyone ever asks me how many shaves i get out of a cream/soap/blade/ razor... and whether i get bbs/dfs/ccs out of various combinations, i can just run a quick check on the sheet and let you know.

yea i know.. i work with data sets for a living. my brain thinks like this. will i ever really use it for anything? probably not. does it add to my shaving enjoyment? definitely.

Now that I think of it, since August, What have I accumulated?
3 DEs, a Superspeed, a Travel Tech and a Slant, of which I really only use the slant,

1 Omega Boar brush,

Proraso ASL, Pre-Post (both of which I use) and a couple of samples of ASL from Bullgoose

A couple of blade samplers and 50 irridiums, which should hold me through 2011 if I order a 200 pack of feathers on January 1 2012

Creams - Proraso, Creamo, Rasorock, Assorted Shave den samples (with a couple of TOBS tubs on my christmas list)

Here is where I fall down:

Soaps

Proaso green tub, arko, VDH Glycerine, VDH Delux, Tabac, Pre de Provence, Klar Kabinett, Cella red tub, P160 Tippo Morbido Kilo.

Now that I total it up, that is much less than $300.00 in 5 months. That's practically Gentlemanly Restraint.

I might just run out of Aftershave Lotion and Proraso Pre/Post and Blades during this sabattacal. In which case, I would feel justified in replacing them.

But only replacing things I actually use, nothing new!

How's that?

I'm in. I need this bad. I started in April because I was sick of the high cost of the Fusion blades. I've already spent well over $1000.00 on this hobby and have enough blades to last me over 5 years and enough soap to last me over 10 years. I have 7 DE's (3 of which I don't even use) and 7 brushes (only 2 Silvertip). I'm more than set to go several years without buying a shave related product.

The only exception is a special edition or group buy Silvertip brush, something a little bigger than an SR3722 and smaller than a Tulip 3.

Exactly. Welcome, brother.

My first major test was today. My favorite favoritest of all favorite unicorn brushes is now available again. Me wants. No money. Already spent too much. I'm going to get through this, but not without suffering some emotional agony.

Doubly exactly my brethren, though technically, the sabbatical is for 2011 and this is still 2010.

Hey, would it be ok to do swaps cause I was thinking of something like this.

I have a Commodore X3 and would like to swap with a member who has a Colonel X2L, to see which we prefer.
I am thinking that would be ok.

No promises or resolutions this year, but I expect to keep the spending pretty low due to reduced interest. I can't see wanting to buy more soaps and creams. There are some vintage razors I'd definitely buy, but only at ridiculously low prices, if the opportunity arose. Maybe top off the injector blade stash a bit. Blue or black OS mugs if I can find them cheap enough.

I'll sign up.

My exceptions:

Any group buys/limited editions I may be interested in.
Any actual good deals in Antique Stores (I usually PIF these, or sell them cheaply...)
Birthday and Christmas doesn't count, since that's other people buying for me.
And from what I remember from last year, I can buy something as long as I sell something of equal or greater value.

We will see how long I last!!

I just noticed my contributer status will need to be renewed at the end of January. While being shave related, it is a "contribution" not a purchase ........ So I am still good to go. Is it sad I am actually taking an inventory of my den to see if any last minute purchases need to be made? Myonly worry is my Tabac. Being my first puck, I really dont know how long it will make it. There is definatly wear in it....however, ordering something "just in case" doesnt seem to be in the spirit (I'd really like to knock some products out this year) I will start practicing my "Gentelmanly Restraint" early!

I am proud of you all. Seriously. Stay strong! I have the utmost confidence in you gents. The ability of man's superego to master the id is proven by our prominant position in the food chain.

(Besides, I need you all to quite driving the prices up on the latests hyped and panic products as I've only recently joined this parade.)

Regards,
Piff

I'm in. I'm starting up a new company and need to devote my time, energy and funds to that.

I have enough stuff for several years at least, and it's nice not to spend valuable time thinking about what I need to get next.

No exceptions, no loopholes...

(for now)

I took an unplanned, 2-year sabatical. Work kept me so busy that I just never got around to buying anything. I even had my wife go online and make buys for blade replacement during this time.

I got online last week to make some buys for a friend/convert. I saw a new soap scent which I decided to purchase for myself. 15-min later, I was looking at an email confirmation for a purchase of $Lot$ of stuff. 45-min later, it happened again for an additional amount that I am ashamed to type. Ultimate point being, do what one may, the AD's never really die.

Well, after several recent, unscheduled purchases this month, I may just be "in" on this.

2010 Semogue LE and a Rudy Vey
KK and two DRs - Arlington and Marlborough
Person Med Preps and some new Feathers
Feather AS

Only the Feather AS is here so far (and it's really, really nice!) but everything should be in before the new year.

I really feel I'm good for the year. Honestly :thumbup1: just gonna spend the year enjoying.

Only possibly exception would be a B&B LE or really terrific group buy but you just can't predict that sort of thing.

Anyway, time will tell but it looks good right now.

Cheers fellas, and Merry Christmas!

Ken
